    Many researchers have studied the control technology of physical properties of foams, because they are important factors to determine washing ability and tactile feel. However, it is difficult to prepare cleansing products with suitable foaming ability and foam stability. In this review, I show some studies on the structure and dynamics of foams, which are the factors of these physical properties.

    In this study, we developed make-up remover preparations comprising a bicontinuous microemulsion using polyglycerol fatty acid esters (PGFE). We obtained the microemulsion by mixing PGFEs with different HLB (hydrophile-lipophile balance) values, then replaced part of the water with polyol and adjusted the relative HLB of the system. Comparison of the phase diagrams of the PGFE and polyoxyethylene (POE)-type nonionic surfactant in the oil and water showed that PGFE formed an I-phase region in a wide temperature range even at low concentrations. This indicated that the HLB of PGFE was not susceptible to the effect of temperature, unlike that of a POE-type nonionic surfactant. In the actual test, the features of the preparations using the bicontinuous microemulsion were evaluated. Taking into consideration that make-up removers are used even around the eyes, we performed an eye irritation test and obtained results indicating that safety was high. Thus, by using PGFE, we obtained a microemulsion with little temperature dependence even at low concentrations of the surfactant and were able to develop preparations that combined high functionality, usability, and safety.

    Although observations of the intact structure of human hair have been performed using various X-ray micro-tomography systems, it has been found difficult to obtain fine images due to the low sensitivity of those systems. In the present study, we utilized a differential phase contrast scanning X-ray microscope to observe the inner microstructure of hair in greater detail without prior sample processing. Permanent waving treatments induced micrometer-scale void structures within the cortex, while slender void structures were observed between the cuticle scales. Although such structural defects were not induced by bleach treatment, the structures of the overlapped laye (i.e., cuticle cellular boundary) become unclear. The present imaging technique clearly displayed different appearances of hair damage induced by permanent waving and bleach treatments.

    A study of eye-tracking for the observation of made-up women's face and hairdo is reported in this article. Eye-tracking while observing was verified by using women's face photos on a PC display with an eye-tracking system. We found that professional hair and make-up artists place a high priority on looking for the face balance. Their eye tracks were recorded from side to side and up and down quickly. On the other hand, ordinary people tend to keep on looking at the center of the face and focus on a small area. The results of eye-tracking analysis present obvious evidence from the implicit knowledge of professionals.
