Air gaps in open tanks with horizontal overflow pipes shall be measured from the bottom of overflow pipe by SHASE-S 206-2000, and from the highest possible water level by ASME A112.1.2-1991. When ASME standard is applied, it is necessary to determine the height of the highest possible water level. The determination of this height is not published. This paper is to publish the heights obtained by the experimentation using flush tanks for water closets and a small transparent plastic tank. The heights of water rise are expressed in exponential functions of incoming flow rates and overflow pipe internal diameters. The highest possible water levels are obtained only when siphonage occurred.

Emissions of VOCs from the painted sample are influenced by the base board material. By the use of small chamber, the emission rates of VOCs from the painted samples on the aluminum board, the MDF board and the ceramic board were measured, and the effects of these base board materials on the emissions were investigated. Results are as follows VOCs are produced by the oxidations of oils and waxes, and base board material controls the oxidation process, consequently base board material controls VOCs emissions. The MDF board suppresses the VOCs emissions and the ceramic board, on the contrary, accelerates the emissions.

Selected four kinds of sources of acetaldehyde in indoor air and its formation mechanism were studied. Adhesive of vinyl acetate polymer emits acetaldehyde contained in the material in the drying process. Acetaldehyde is formed from the vinyl acetate polymer by hydrolysis reaction after drying and the formation rate is proportion to humidity in exposed air. Acetaldehyde is formed by oxidization of ethanol in an air cleaner with photo-catalysis when ethanol exists in inlet air. Acetaldehyde is also emitted more from core of wooden boards (a larch tree) then from side, and the emission rate decreases gradually till a tenth among one month after logging. Acetaldehyde also emitted from mold grown on non-dried wooden boards when it exposed to room air of 70 to 90 % in humidity for two months.

In this study, the simple prediction equation for VOCs indoor concentration based on VOCs emission rate measured by the test chamber method is proposed. The emission rate decay of TVOC with passage of time is modeled as the double exponential formula and the simplified estimation method based on the emission behavior of TVOC from toluene free paints is presented. Thus, it is thought that it is effective to VOCs measures to apply the double exponential formula of TVOC of toluene free paints, and to evaluate the VOCs density attenuation period.

Although the steady state concentration from the formaldehyde-emitting material can be expressed by using HBF (Hoetjer-Berge-Fujii) equation, the equation does not consider the background formaldehyde concentration. Thus we derived prediction equation of formaldehyde from HBF equation in consideration of the background formaldehyde concentration and verify the expressiono

Some of the students complained the bad physical condition in school, and this phenomenon is a big social problems. So this study was carried out to determine on the VOCs and formaldehyde emission rates of school furnitures and its constituent materials. From our result, it turned out that the VOCs emission rates were 1158(μg/h) for equipment shelf, 29.3(μg/h) for locker, 86,7(μg/h) for testing bench and the one's of formaldehyde were 357(μg/h) for equipment shelf, 246(μg/h) for locker, 186(μg/h) for testing bench. It also turned out that the VOCs emission rates of its constituent materias were ranged from 13.3 to 32.3(μg/h) and the one's of formaldehyde were ranged from 1.4 to 7.8(μg/h).

Recently, the sickness symptom related to school environment or so-called "sick school syndrome" is a social problem. Sick school syndrome is caused by chemical substances emitted from building materials and educational products. Some of the studies on sick school syndrome from a point of indoor air environment have been reported, however, we can't find the useful information on the emission of chemical substances from educational products. In addition, its size and form are various and different, and the standardized testing method has not been established. In this study, we determined the emission rates of chemical substances from some educational products and predicted pollutant concentrations in a classroom where the educational materials were placed. It turned out that the predicted value was not so serious to threaten health in an assumption of the steady-state under complete mixing, however, in an actual classroom where distribution of concentration consequently appears, concentration at the place near the emission source might be expected to be more higher values than our predicted ones.

One contains ambient air temperature, absolute humidity, wind direction, wind velocity, nocturnal radiation, illuminance and irradiance at intervals of one minute. The other contains modified data at intervals of 30 minutes by sky luminance distribution and sky radiance distribution. Long-term observation data had been gained in Chofu-city, Tokyo, Japan from 1993 to 2002. TWD9302 makes it possible to improve the precision of illumination simulation and cooling/heating load calculation with taking sky luminance distribution, illuminance, sky radiance distribution, irradiance and night radiation into consideration.

As for the sun-shading performance, an external blind with the outside slat is superior to the double skin and the air flow window. The authors previously performed a research on the thermal performance evaluation method for an external blind by comparing the calculated and experimented results and the accuracy of the calculation algorithm was proved. A principal objective of this paper is to propose the time interval of the suitable solar radiation data from a result of simulation for the external blinds where the horizontal slat having a rectangle section is installed on the whole surface.

The solar irradiance is more fiuctuant factor than the other weather elements. The popularized weather data for architectural environmental engineer are almost made up for each one hour, and those are turned out to the averaged data without fluctuation specificity. In this paper, we examined the characteristics of short-time fluctuation of solar irradiance and the effects on rounding errors of peak values in several cases the integration time.

In order to keep environment in the air-conditioned room comfortable, it is important to anticipate air velocity and temperature fields precisely. The code solving simultaneously the Navier-Stokes equations governing flow field inside and outside the room and the heat conduction equation applying to walls, instead of assuming the heat transfer coefficient between the fluid and the surface of solids, are developed. The experimental and the computational results showed good agreement. It is put to use to the problem of the internal and the external insulation of the cubic shell during the cooling process.

It experimented in order to grasp about the rate of convection heat transfer of the fundamental heat characteristic of fluctuating breeze. improving Error margin under non-isothermal situation was assumed to be a problem by the former report. Therefore, improving the experiment device and grasp of the rate of convection heat transfer of non-isothermal stationary airflow and it's fluctuating breeze was tried. And improving Error margin of airflow interplay of 'fluctuating breeze and relative speed airflow'

In the heat load calculation used in design of air conditioning system, radiative heat transfer phenomena is treated in very simple way. Radiative heat transferred from a wall to other walls is simplified as the heat between walls and room air, in which the radiative heat flux is estimated as the product of the radiative heat transfer coefficient and the temperature difference between room air and a wall. However the shape of room, obstacles in the room etc. could influence the radiative heat flux, the simplified expression of the radiation neglects such influence. In this paper, the method to evaluate the radiative heat transfer coefficient based on the CFD simulation is presented, in which the radiative heat transfer between obstacles and walls etc. and the convective heat transfer from walls to air are analyzed precisely. The radiative heat transfer coefficient is estimated in several case studies applied to office room models.
