In cancer patients, it is known that the power of immunologic response is generally weak: a decrease of peripheral lymphocyte count is seen and the delayed type hypersensitivity reaction such as tuberculin reaction becomes weaker. There is an urgent need for some kinds of support therapy in treating gastric cancer cases besides surgical treatment. The authors expect that immunologic means will work as an effective complementary treatment. For this, some kind of indicator is necessary to measure the effect of treatment; the authors tested the lymphocyte count, the immunoglobulin levels and the in vitro blast-like transformation of the lymphocytes at various stages. Comparison of these tests indicated that the last test gave the best distinction between the cancer patients and normal controls, and expressed the course of the disease satisfactorily. Thus the prognosis of the disease will be followed hereafter using· the blast like transformation rate of the lymphocytes as the indicator.

Predominance of gastric cancer is characteristic of the malignant tumors in the Japanese. From the previous questionnaire on the operated cases of entire Japan, it was found that operation in the early stage proved to give sufficiently good results. However, about 303 of the cases are still inoperable even today. It means that early diagnosis is not yet easy, in spite of the rapid progress in diagnostic technic. An attempt was made to apply the tanned cell agglutination method to the clinical diagnosis of gastric cancer patients. The agglutination of the cells sensitized with cancer extract seemed to have a considerable significance in testing the gastric cancer patients, as no agglutination was seen in the normal men and pregnant women. However, the reaction was not strictly cancer specific, as it occurred in gastric ulcer patients also, though low in titers.

The invention of the swan type double bending gastrofiberscope solved the pending problem of observing the posterior wall of the upper part of the body of the stomach and the frontal view just below the cardia. It also made possible the close observation of the pyloric region which was another old pending wish of those using the gastrofiberscope. Moreover, this new scope can be inserted into the pyloric ring closely along the lesser curvature because the new scope had a lower bending part This fact is an unexpected fruit for the inventor and is now expected to form the basis of the development of the typical duodenofiberscope.

The incidence of blunt injury to the heart is becoming more frequent with the increasing number of automobile accidents. However, traumatic tricuspid insufficiency is less frequently encountered. This report concerns the hemodynamic data and operative treatment of a patient with traumatic rupture of the chordae tendineae to the anterior leaflet of the tricuspid valve by the Starr Edwards disc valve 7 years and 5 months after the injury. A review of the surgically treated cases suggested that the number of valve repair could be increased when treated at an earlier stage.

This investigation was made to obtain informations on the changes in abutment tooth mobility by wearing a removable partial denture. Sixteen cases were prepared for this purpose. These cases were selected in the same condition for the application of unilateral mandibular extension saddle type of a removable partial denture. The same designed partial dentures were applied and clinical follow up investigations were carried out during about two years. The tooth mobility of these abutment teeth were measured at certain intervals by using a special electrical measuring device. These results were as follows: 1) Changes in abutment tooth mobility were larger in the second premolar (for direct retainer) than in the first premolar (for indirect retainer). 2) The magnitude of the changes in mobility was intimately correlated with the initial mobility. Also the differences in the mobility between abutments were related to the following mobility changes. 3) The splinting effect of the abutment teeth by wearing partial denture was observed in some cases. 4) The transmitting force from denture to abutment tooth gradually decreased according to the denture wearing period.

For the purpose of analyzing the clinical impression procedures for the mandibular extension saddle removable partial denture, a special simulated model with an electrical pressure indicating system built into soft Silicone rubber was manufactured. The load distributions in impression procedures of the alginate, rubber and Silicone with stock tray and resin custom tray were precisely recorded. These methods were completely followed in routine clinics and the results were as follows: i) The load distribution agianst the residual ridge during the impression procedure by stock tray in alginate and heavy-bodied silicone impression materials indicated almost the same amount of mucocompression effect. ii) The rubber impression procedure by stock tray indicated non-mucocompression effect but an adequate amount of mucocompression effect was observed by resin custom tray technique. This impression technique will reduce about 70% of total denture movement during mastication. iii) The silicone impression material with resin custom tray indicated the same results as the rubber materials.
