The outline of the National Diet Library automation project is introduced. Special emphasis laid on the description of the development of the MARC Project in the Library of Congress, and MARC II test tape experiment at the National Diet Library. In 1961, after the removal to the new building, new posts on automation were created in Science and Technology Section of the Reference and Bibliography Division. In 1968, this posts were transferred to the Planning and Training Section of the Administrative Division. In July 1969, Preparation Office for Automation was newly created in Administrative Division. The pilot experimentation started in 1965. Listing of the several experiments, chiefly in compilation of bibliographies on western language materials are as follows. 1965: Chinese characters appearing in the Japanese Periodical Index ; a frequency survey. 1966: List of Foreign Atomic Energy Reports. Catalog of Serials in Foreign Languages. 1967: Monthly List of Foreign Scientific and Technical Publications. 1968: Accession List ; Foreign Language Publications. 1969: MARC II test tape experiment. General Index to the Debates at the National Diet. The ten years' project begins 1970. The first five years' project mainly concerns processing western language materials with using MARC II tapes. In the next five years, the project will extends over Japanese and Chinese materials.
