As for general literatures, the extraction of terms for information retrieval is in most cases made from the abstracts (secondary materials) of the literatures. With respect to patent literatures, however, it is required to extract terms from original materials because patent specifications are often considered to be serviceable for the purpose of information retrieval. In the latter case, it is discussed how the contents of such original materials having too much descriptions can be covered without omission by means of the limited number of terms. This report gives a theoretical ground for the matter that information retrieval can be made at considerably high level of certainty by dividing and grouping contents of original materials (patent specifications) on the basis of examples, and then by extracting terms and making in-put of such terms after classification. In addition to it, considerations are given to a method to diminish systematically based on relationship between cause and effect, the number of terms to be extracted, as well as a state of imperfect extraction on the basis of comparison between basic patents and improved patents'.

Scientific periodicals in European languages owned by Chiba University Library are as follows, 1. science and technology, 2780 titles, 146 locations, 2. humanities and social science, 754 titles, 58 locations. Already, our library have published the union list of science and technology. Then, we compiled the list of humanities and social science for local use. The used computer was OKITAC-4300 (40 kilo-byte only). We reported an example of the holding list with KWIC-index compiled by the mini-computer, and several methods which were found useful for making an index.
