Generalization by standardizing morphological characteristics of plants assures accurate and easy recognition of plants, and thus leads to the compilation of a creditable flora. Moreover, by means of the numerical treatment and patternization of standardized information about plants, characteristics of plant will be clear defined. It also enables a great number of species to be processed in a short time. To identify a plant in question, it is necessary at first to find the family, in which the plant may belong. Up to the present, there has been no universal method that meets this necessity. An attempt is made for automatic retrieval of family names of plants by means of pattern recognition based on standardized information on morphology of plants in spermatophytes. It is proved that this method is effective in enabling laymen to find correct family names.
