In 1965 Japan Science Foundation compiled "The Classification of Science and Technology" based on a new concept, for the purposes of classifying and organizing the goals of technological programs, and clarifying the industrial and technological systems and their mutual relations. Founded on this scheme, "The Classification of Science and Technology" (a draft), a decimal classification scheme with four digits, was developed in 1969 to classify and retrieve subjects for research in the fields of science and technology. Based on the results of the actual use of the previous classification schem, "The Classification of Science and Technology" and its "Revised Edition" were compiled. This paper introduces the outlines of these classification schemes, the guiding concept in developing them, and process of their compilation. Also mentioned are experimental services for sources of information on scientific and technolo-gical research using these schemes, and examples of uses of the schemes.
