This paper is concerned with a newly developed Kanji input device which can be typed by an untrained operator with the so called "touch method". The features of the device are: There are two sorts of inputs, initial input (pronunciation of a Kanji by Kana, the Japanese syllabary) and secondary input (information to identify a Kanji when there are many Kanji corresponding to the initial input). They are typed with a Kana typewriter which is similar to an alphabet typewriter. A man-machine interactive method is used in which a machine indicates a kind of secondary input by a sound and/or color. The so called "touch method" is possible since visual displays are not used for the interaction. An experimental proto model has been developed in which a microprocessor controls a Kana keyboard, a Kanji teleprinter, sounds and color lamps for the indication, and about 10 kBytes of ROMs for the programs and the data to convert Kana to Kanji.

This paper reports a concept and outline of an information retrieval system applicable to electronic parts selection for apparatus design. Usually, it is possible to select necessary parts by a classification or key expression, for example figure, function and usage. But in many cases, numerical values of representative qualities are used for parts selection. Generally, numerical values of qualities have various ways of expression involving units and magnifications. Therefore their information retrieval is very difficult. By this system development, the information retrieval by these quality values has become possible. This technique is expected to be applicable for other information systems accompanied by numerical values. Additionally, this report refers to ON-LINE retrieval and input treatment from computer terminals of each branch work by apparatus design engineers.
