Flange connection is widely utilized to connect piping, fittings and valves in chemical, refinery and petrochemical industry. However, leakage incidents from gasket surface have been happening at bolted flange connections. The authors experienced an incident that the existence of insulation, which is used to reduce heat loss of process fluids in piping, affected leakage at high temperature-high pressure (HT-HP) piping flange connection. In this paper, leakage mechanism with insulation at HT-HP piping flange connection is explained from the point of view of bolt tension calculated using finite element analysis and relaxation. Consequently, it is recommended that insulation not be used for HT-HP piping flange connection, and a weather seal or a personal protection be used instead.

Based on authors experience, high-pressure technology and trans-disciplinary education for science and engineering are expressed focusing on fundamental academic fields. The author has been working in the editorial committee for the journal of High Pressure Institute of Japan from 1997, and also in Tokyo Institute of Technology for the education of science and engineering from 1990. The high-pressure technology is based on almost all of academic fields, in the same manner as other technology. Recently, trans-disciplinary education has been more significant corresponding to the paradigm shift of technology due to the drastic change in the social situation, such as Russian invasion to Ukraine, carbon neutral policy of governments, etc.. Also example of trans-disciplinary education in Tokyo Institute of Technology is introduced with its evolution and future vision.
