Russia's invasion of Ukraine has led to a global energy crisis. For Japan, a “resource-poor country,” the importance of a stable energy supply has never been higher. At the same time, Japan must step up various efforts to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, a challenge common to all humankind. These include Japan-specific measures such as the use of fuel ammonia and the generation of e-methane. This paper discusses the challenges that Japan needs to address and the measures to achieve them in the context of stable energy supply and carbon neutrality.

IHI Plant Services are developing conventional flat-bottomed cylindrical type storage tanks with a larger capacity. However, this type storage tank with about 40,000 tons or more can’t be constructed, because of possibility that stress corrosion cracking (SCC) may occur. And also periodic open inspection is required in case of this type.
Therefore, in order to solve the problems that the above-mentioned large capacity cannot be constructed and periodic open inspection is required, we are developing a prestressed concrete sidewall membrane storage tank as a new concept type storage tank for storing liquefied ammonia. In this paper, we describe the problems and countermeasures in the development of PC membrane storage tanks.
