Six hundred references were analyzed in which Japanese researchers were given as first author. These were selected from 13, 222 references in “Advances in Immunology” in the period between 1978 and 1982.
The following results were obtained;
1) There were 573 the serial journals and the most frequent serial journals 106 (18.49%) were the ones published two years ago.
2) In the serial journals, “J. Immunol.” was most frequent. (161 cases or 26.83%)
3) 75.83% of all articles were written by two to four persons, the average of number of authors was 3.4 per reference.
4) Serial journals were published in 10 countries under 89 titles, of which 10 titles and 32 (5.59%) references all in English were published in Japan.
5) First author's fields were classified as 25 by NLM classification, of which the most frequent one was bacteriology and immunology. (232 references or 38.67%)
6) First authors belonged to 45 domestic institutes of which old governmental universities (including the Imperial University) represented twelve, with 182 references or 66.42% of the total literature.
7) In 10 nations there were 62 foreign institutes which the first authors belonged to. In the foreign institutes, forty-six institutes and 226 (81.60%) references were in U. S. A.
8) The most frequently referred to Japanese author was Dr. Tomio Tada. (46 references or 7.67%)
