〔Purpose〕To define the minimum essentials of knowledge items in perioperative medicine for adult nursing care within basic nursing education (“minimum essentials”) using the ideas of clinical practice instructors (“clinical instructors”).

〔Methods〕Delphi surveys were conducted on 614 clinical instructors a total of three times. A consensus rate of 70% was used to indicate consensus.

〔Results〕Consensus was reached on 50 of the 134 knowledge items. Clinical instructors predicting complications from anesthesia or surgery considered observation and preventative nursing during and after surgery to be minimum essentials and viewed knowledge for focusing on and intervening with underlying disease, lifestyle, and psychological conditions that serve as risk factors for complications before and after surgery as minimum essentials.

〔Conclusions〕These findings suggest the importance of using the minimum essentials obtained in this study as a reference to reorganize lesson plans on perioperative medicine and assess education based on the aspects of nursing practice and knowledge acquisition among students during practicums and at graduation.

〔Aims〕This study aims to clarify the issues that mid-level nurses find in improving their nursing practice ability and how to solve them. Further, it aims to obtain suggestions for improving nursing practice ability in an organization.

〔Methods〕We conducted semi-structural interviews and analyzed the obtained data qualitatively and inductively.

〔Results〕Mid-level nurses regarded the following issues as needing improvement in their nursing practice ability:1) “sluggish basic nursing practice ability of new and young nurses,” 2) “insufficient education of new and young nurses,” 3) “sluggish nursing practice ability of mid-level nurses themselves,” 4) “reduced motivation for career development as a nurse,” and 5) “lack of human resources to enhance nursing.” The solutions they identified were:1) “individual practical teaching,” 2) “continuous support from the organization,” 3) “strengthening motivation for nursing practice,” 4) “growth of mid-level nurses themselves,” and 5) “mental health management.”

〔Conclusions〕Mid-level nurses see are not only concerned with the current state of nursing practice ability and education, but also with career development and securing human resources. These are different from the nursing manager’s point of view. Integrating the ideas of mid-level nurses and nursing managers and considering strategies for improving the nursing practice ability of the organization together are thus recommended.
