Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) was conducted on cellulose, lignin, and xylose and their mixture in the composition of water hyacinth in the temperature range of 200‒280 °C for 2 h. The hydrochar product was analyzed for its mass yield, elemental composition, and color intensity. It was found that the intensities of red, green, and blue and brightness were similar and could be correlated with the higher heating value with an average relative error of 0.044. Elemental analysis and mass yield measurement indicated that the separation of carbon into solid and liquid phases was completed within 2 h, and the solid phase underwent relatively slow dehydration.
