Recently seismic deformation of earth structure has been evaluated by comparing with allowable deformation maintaining on the function. This study simulates the observed settlement of centrifuge shaking table test of rockfill dam by Watanabe-Baba method which expand Newmark method to FEM analysis. As a result, Watanabe-Baba method can simulate adequately the deformation of loose case up to the settlement larger than 0.5% of dam height or 1m, however it estimates the settlement smaller than observed settlement of dense case.

The Isawa Dam is an earth center core type rockfill dam and the dam body has been under construction. At 8:43 a.m. on June 14 of 2008, an earthquake which epicenter was located in the southern part of Iwate prefecture and 10km away from the Isawa dam was occurred. The earthquake caused damages on the dam body and the spillway of the Isawa Dam. As regards the spillway, the cracks of the structures, the damages on the foundation, etc. were occured. This paper reports the characteristics of the cracks induced by the earthquake and the investigation method, and discusses the causes of the damages. Keywords: The Iwate-Miyagi Nairiku Earthquake in 2008, spillway, crack, investigation, repair work

After brief introduction of the Guidelines for Seismic Safety Evaluation of Dams (draft) issued in 2005, damage to 8 dams of various types caused by recent earthquakes that occurred in the vicinities of the dams during 2004 and 2009, such as Niigata-Chuetsu, Iwate-Miyagi inland earthquakes, Japan, and Wenchuan earthquake, China is explained with some lessons learned. Cases of strengthening or reconstruction of 3 dams in U.S.A. and Canada are outlined with some findings. Finally, recent research on seismic performance of dam-gates under hydrodynamic pressure is summarized.
