These days, it is required to comprehend the conditions of location for fitness clubs and the influence which hard competition among them have on their management and their members. Before these studies, it is necessary to know the location pattern of fitness clubs. The purpose of this study was to clarify the location pattern of fitness clubs and the relationship between the number of fitness clubs and the population. For this purpose, the number of fitness clubs was counted in every municipality in the Kanto District. Then, the density of fitness clubs and the number of fitness clubs per 100,000 population (NPPOP) was calculated. Every municipality was classified into two groups by the ratio of daytime population to nighttime population. Each group was divided into six subgroups according to the population. The density of fitness clubs was high in the center of Tokyo Metropolitan Area. The municipalities in this area have more than 10 fitness clubs per 100 km^2. The mean of the NPPOPs was calculated for each subgroup. The subgroups are not statistically different in means. Those municipalities were extracted whose NPPOPs were higher than mean+1SD. Investigations in these municipalities will make it possible to clarify the conditions of location for fitness clubs and the influence of hard competition among fitness clubs.
