    The aim of this research is to determine whether or not the explanations of natural phenomena made by primary school children are based on some metaphoric ideas. For this purpose I conducted an investigation using the POE (prediction, observation, and explanation) method. The subjects were twenty-nine third grade students. They were asked to predict, observe, and explain the warming of objects by sunlight and write down their reactions on paper. By analyzing their explanations, I found that some of their statements are based on metaphoric conceptions. Some statements are based on the container mataphor and the wall metaphor. These metaphors are kinds of existence metaphor. The existence metaphor is sometimes shared by scientists and students of science. The importance of this fact is discussed.

    This paper examined the trends in state-level policy on environmental education in the United States. In the 70's, environmental education policy made great progress. But in the first half of the 80's, environmental education policy has declined rapidly. We think this decline is result of incomplete integration of environmental education into the educational system. In the latter half of the 80's and 90's, environmental education policy has been revived. This revival waw activated by grass-roots activity by environmental education advocates and was accelerated by the National Environmental Education Act. At present, environmental education has a chance to take part in educational reform and be successfully integrated into the educational system. Wisconsin, Arizona and Florida are states with advanced environmental education policy. For example, Arizona has a fine and comprehensive state plan for environmental education. Wisconsin has an environmental education center which supports state-wide in-service teacher education and environmental education assessment. Florida has a network of state agencies for environmental education and environmental education trust funds. The above cases are taken up in this paper.

    The purpose of this paper is to determine the way students understand course content by adopting quizzes, worksheets, and visual experiences at a technical college. In this paper, we will report results taken from three courses : Electrical Circuit, Numerical Analysis, and the Law of Electrical Magnetic Wave. In passive lecture type classes and in assesment centered classes, students' knowledge tends to be transient and students can not apply their knowledge. To avoid such problems, students are often given quizzes in class and teachers find these useful. In this paper, we will attempt to explore the learning environment through the idea of educational reform. The students learned more effectively through visual experiences. For example, students made their own worksheets, which consist of handouts and assignments. Students also made trial products of electrical circuits and cards of the law of electrical magnetic wave. We have been trying to understand the adequacy of students' comprehension level and teaching materials, and to discover problems in order to make future classes better. From the results of our study, we will report how students develop their understanding visually and numerically. In addition, we will report on the attitudes of instructors who are teaching the classes.

    The oxidation of has been a common experiment in junior high shcool courses. The experiment is concerned with the law of definite proportion. The powder X-ray diffraction of the product of the copper oxidation reaction revealed that it was a mixture of copper oxide and a considerable amount of unreacted copper. The improved methods described here provide stoichiometric oxidation of the copper powder. Copper powder (1.00g) and silica (0.50g) were mixed in a ceramic crucible. The mixture was heated with a gas funnel. The reaction mixture was vigorously stirred with a stainless-steal spatula during oxidation. Upon heating for a period of 15 min, the reaction mixture came to a red heat. After cooling to room temperature, the reaction mixture was weighted with an electronic balance. The weight of the product was close to its theoretical weight. The same results were obtained by the junior high school students.

    The books in the area of science education now available in Germany were identified, using the VLB database. From a bibliometrical analysis of these educational books in the areas of physics, chemistry, and biology, the following observation were made. The ratio of books written by single authors are on the decrease in the order of physics, chemistry, and biology. The ratio of books in serial publications is in the reverse order. As for the numbers of books, school books, books written by single authors, and totalled purchase price, the relative tendency among educational books in each area does not greatly differ, except that the ratio of school books in the area of physics is low. There are 445 books available now in the area of science education. Two thirds of the books are written by single authors, and thirty percent of the books are part a series. The books in the area of science education are published by 82 publishers, and almost twenty percent of these publishers produce books in all areas of physics. chemistry, and biology.
