Bio-film treatment process has been applied to the drinking water treatment plant used polluted lake water as source of water supply. It is said that this process have effect on removal and degradation of algae. But the role of smaller animals such as RotatoriaPhilodina erythrophthalmaand OligochaetaAeolosoma hemprichiinhabit in the bio-film has not been made clear yet sufficiently. Therefore, in this study, we spotlighted to these Rotatoria and Oligochaeta as smaller animals on the degradation of AOKO (bluegreen algal blooms), and then some experiments usingthese smaller animals in aerobic conditions with andwithout illuminations were made.
The results may be summarised as follows. (1) The degradation of AOKO was promoted efficiently in dark conditions without photosynthesis. (2) Existence ofP.erythrophthamaandA. hemprichipromoted degradation of AOKO under both dark and light conditions. (3) Since detritus feederA. hemprichifeeds flocculated AOKO, and filter feederP. erythrophthalmafeeds dispersed AOKO deflocculated byA. hemprichiingestion, co-existence is much effective to promotly degradate the flocculated AOKO observed in the eutrophic lake. (4) The existence of smaller animals had direct and indirect functions to degradate AOKO.Direct one is degradation of AOKO, and indirect one is activation of total ecosystem through the food chain by increase of dissolved organic matter with degradation of AOKO.

The algaecide effects of various copper materials were experimentally investigated. The elution rate of copper was approximately expressed by the Langmuir type for copperplated media and by the Freundlich type for copper chip and granular copper, respectively.
These materials were effective based on the experimental results, viz. algae SS concentration, pH and growth rate constant. The practical utilization methods of these materials were presented and considered.

Both Tatusmi Watercourse and Ichinose Irrigation Canal run through populous areas in Ishikawa Prefecture.
Investigations were done in August and November, 1985 in Tatsumi Watercourse and in July, 1985 in Ichinose Irrigation Canal. In this study three different kinds of values were obtained at each of the six stations in both watercourses: the values of physical and chemical characteristics of water quality, those of DAIpo (Diatom Assemblage Index to organic water pollution) and those of RPI_D (River Pollution Index) .
In Tatsumi Watercourse the water quality becomes slightly polluted in the downstream, but the values of DAIpo show that it remains clean on the whole. In the main stream the values of RPI_Dwere 66 in August, 78 in November. They were 71 in August, 77 in November in the watercourse to Kenrokuen Park.
In Ichinose Irrigation Canal, the values of DAIpo showed a low values of 26 at station 3. This is caused by the inflow of a great deal of domestic water from the urban area of Yamashiro Spa. But the values of DAIpo of the downstream stations showed higher values, which means the water becomes cleaner as it leaves the urban area.
Numerical assessment chart and the values of RPI_Dshowed that obviously the different quality of the water pollution between these two watercourses. It was caused by the fact that the Ichinose course does not have a sewage system.
The main points at issues to be examined relating this study are as follows: 1) In Tatsumi Water course measures are needed by which constant flow rate of water is to be secured throughout the year.2) In Ichinose Irrigation Canal the inflow of polluted water to Lake Sibayama-gata should be avoided. So it is necessary to establish a sewage system in the urban area of Yamashiro Spa.

The effects of thermal waste water to the epilithicdiatom species composition were examined. The dominant species found at abnormal water temperaturestation wereAchnanthes exigua, Navicula minima, Navicula sp., Gomphonema clevei, Gomphonemaparvulum, Nitzschia amphibiaandNitzschia frustulum. Most of the dominant species were eurythermalor thermophilous ones. The diversity of the communities did not lowered remarkably.

(1) The main dominant species of attached microalgae are Homoeothrix janthina and Cloniophora plumosa in both August and December.
(2) The contents of a digestive tract consist mainly of the detritus including small amount of micro-algae and inorganic materials.
(3) The main dominant species in the contents of a digestive tract are Navicula seminulum among the all Asellus hilgendorfii examined at every stations in August. Another common species is Gomphonema subangur which appeares more than 10%.
(4) The contents of a digestive tract in December are occupied mostly with the detritus which might derive from the decomposition of the leaves.
(5) The similarity index Cλ of the micro-algal composition in the digestive tract between A. hilgendorfii at the same station are strongly affected by the appearance of filamentous algae, H. janthina and C. plumosa
(6) To measure the algal electivity by A. hilgendorfii based on the method of Ivelv (1961), there is a tendency for both H. janthina and C. plumosa to be avoided, while N. seminulum are selected in August.

In early summer of 1987 the micro alga occured in large quantities as plankton in the eutrophicated Sagami Reservoir of Kanagawa, Japan. The composition of planktonic comunity at that time differed distinctly from that of late years. It consisted almost of the mono-alga that, by its biomass, brough about the yellowish green water bloom during the periodJune to July. In the case of its mass occurence, thenumber of cells per 1 ml was about 2 million. Thealga was studied in the living stage from the various viewpoints of taxonomy and defined by the following features.
Colonies 4-celled to about 32 celled, with cellsplaced at the ends of remnants or strands thatwere formed by the rupture and gelatinization ofthe mother cell wall. Mucilage almost absent, butin the case of presence badly visible. Adult cells spherical 4.0-6.5μm in diameter, chloroplastcup-shaped with pyrenoid. Asexual reproductionthrough autospores. Autospores spherical-oval to spherical, formed 2 or 4.
According to each kind of the observed results, it is satisfactory to consider this micro alga as
Dictyosphaerium pulchellum Wood var. minutum DEFL.1926
It appears to be the first report, in Japan, that thegenus Dictyosphaerium perticipated in the yellowishgreen water bloom in the eutrophic waters.
