JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe dinoflagellate Peridinium bipes was irradiated with ultravilet (UV) lamps which emit 253.7 nmlight. The relationship between the time required for all the cells to die and the strength of continuous UV radiation was expressed by a hyperbolic curve, i, e., all the cells died by 6 hr and 48 hr under continuous UV radiation greater than 2400 and 80μW cm-2, respectively. The time required for all the live cells to die after a certain of continuous UV radiation also conforms to a hyperbolic relation with strength of UV radiation, i. e., all the live cells were killed by UV radiation of 80μm cm-2 for longer than 2 hr and 2400μm cm-2 for longer than 1 min within 6 and 19 days, respectively.View full abstractDownload PDF (529K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSEffect of nutrients, especially blue green alga, Microcystis aeruginosa addition to the sediment from Lake Kasumigaura on the musty odor production by actinomycetes were determined. In the experiment with the water extract of sediment as a culture broth for actiomycetes, the addition of starch was the most effective to the odor production and the odor was accelerated by the addition of phosphorus with starch. Moreover, sediment with starch was found to support the odor production by actinomycetes. Actinomycetes could produce the odor in the sediment with high concentration of M. aeruginosa as a starch like-substance under shaking condition. It was considered that the two factors, the additional high concentration of M.aeruginosa to the sediment and the aerobic condition were of importance to the musty odor occurrence associated with actinomycetes in Lake Kasumigaura.View full abstractDownload PDF (555K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSSeasonal changes of peritricha and physical, chemical and biological factors influencing to the standing crop of the microbe were investigated during the period from January 1986 to March 1988 in eutrophicated Lake kasumigaura. Species number, maximum and average numbers of peritricha attached on the setting board at Kiharaoki in the lake were 23 (species), 590n/cm2 and 245n/cm2, respectively.Vorticella campanula, Episty lis hentscheliandCampanella umbellaria were dominant species through the investigated period. Peritricha decreased with an increase in ammonium ion concentration, while the microbe increased with an increase in chlorophylla during a dominance of diatom, It was suggested that ammonium ion concentration was a limitting factor for the growth of peritricha in Lake Kasumigaura.View full abstractDownload PDF (875K) -
