Corrosion test of high purity alunfinum were examined against dilute solutions of various corrosive agents.
The tests were carried out at 30°C, by measuring the weight loss, and corrosion rate was expressed as g/mm
2hr and cm/100days.
The results obtained were as follows:
(1) The corrosion rate of every grade of aluminum against NaOH or 1N HCl, and of low grade of aluminum against 0.1N HCl or 1N HNO
3 shows higher value than the line of resistance 0.1cm/100days. It is unsuitable for aluminum to use as the resistive materials against such concentration of these agents.
(2) The corrosion rate increases together with the concentration of corrosive agents, but on acetic acid it is inverse.
(3) There are two breaks on the resistibility curves for each agents, one of them appears at 99.5% Al and the other at 99.8% Al. The resistibility of under 99.5% is not so strong, but it is almost equal between the two points, and the resistibility increases extremely when over the latter point. This shows that the resistibility of higher purity aluminum is very excellent.
