As a fundamental research of liquid-liquid extraction in spray tower, the velocity of a liquid drop in the stationary immiscible liquid column was measured and correlated with the size of drop and physical properties of the liquid. The results were shown in Fig. 3 as a dimensionless plot, where the ordinate was the Reynolds' number corrected by d/D and the abscissa was 3CRe
2/4 (=d
3gρΔρ/μ
2). The correction of wall effect was made by 1-(d/D)
1.5 as was suggested by Munroe. For comparison the data of air bubbles obtained by O'Brien and Gosline were recalculated and plotted in Fig. 4 and Fig. 5.
Nomenclatures used in these figures are as follows:
C=Drag coefficient Re=duρ/μ
D=Diam. of tube u=Velocity of liquid drop
d=Equiv. diam. of drop ρ=Density of continuous phase
g=Acceleration due gravity Δρ=Difference of density of both liquids
M=1-(d/D)
1.5 μ=Viscosity of continuous phase
