We made some special cyclones which were considered to be improved types, and compared these characteristics with those of a normal cyclone by many experiments.
"Van Tongeren" type (No. 8-VI), which is an amended No. 8-I type, is not effective.
"Parent and Child" type (No. 8-VII), which has one or two small cyclones around the exit pipe of No. 8-I type, has not also better collection efficiency.
Helical top type (B) has lower prossure drop but lower collection efficiency contrary to expectation.
Circular inlet guide vane lattice type (C) has complicated construction but good characteristics.
Circular inlet space type (E) has higher pressure drop but the highest collection efficiency.
Tangential inlet normal type (D), which is similar to No. 8-I type, has simple construction, higher efficiency but the highest pressure drop.
Longer length of cylinder reduces pressure loss fairly and also collection efficiency slightly.
If the diameter of exit pipe is too small, it causes only higher pressure loss, and improves scarcely collection efficiency.
Effect of inserted length of exit pipe is delicate for collection efficiency, but it is generally adequate to insert it down to the inlet as usual.
Inlet vane reduces pressure loss but collection efficiency badly, and also larger dust port reduces collection efficiency slightly. Spiral exit is ineffective and innocuous. And some other devices are found not to be much promising.
With these results, the theory of a cyclone is discussed and referential data for design of a cyclone are obtained.
