The local heat and mass transfer coefficients from humid air to the frost surface and the effective thermal conductivity were measured under the condition of a forced convection.
A local heat flux was determined by measuring the temperature distribution of a normal direction in the stainless steel plate.
Experimental data showed that the values of the local heat transfer coefficient under the frosting condition were larger than one estimated by McAdams'equation. The reasons for this fact were considered to be due to the interference of heat and mass transfer and the frost surface roughness which caused the increase of heat transfer area and the disturbance of boundary layer.
The effective thermal conductivity of the frost layer increased with the increase of the frost layer density, but the relationship was not obvious, because the heat conduction in frost layer was affected not only by the heat conduction in solid phase, but also by the heat transfer in gas phase, which was caused by moisture diffusion.

Absorption rates of CO
2 and SO
2 into still liquids of various solutions, such as sodium hydroxide solutions, potassium hydroxide solutions and lithium hydroxide solutions, were measured in a simple stop-cock type absorber, and the experimental results were compared with the calculated ones for a long contact time.
In absorption of CO
2, experimental values agreed well with the theoretical ones of a two-step successive chemical reaction resulted from (1, 1) order irreversible reaction and (1, 1)-1 order reversible reaction. On the other hand, in absorption of SO
2, experimental values agreed well with the theoretical values of twostep successive instantaneous reaction.

Moving bed of granular materials is often accompanied by the formation of constant velocity region, that is, plug flow region in the central core of the bed, and the size of this region varies with bed depth together with the values of stresses exerted by the solids.
In this paper, on the basis of a few modifications for stress condition at failure point and plug flow region, the variation of the size of plug flow region with bed depth was approximately calculated for the region except near the outlet by assuming a material to be continuous and to obey Coulomb's failure criterion.
Furthermore, it was also verified to be possible to estimate the size of plug flow region in the large particle system with the results for continuous materials and a simple model.

In this paper, we analysed the dynamic characteristics of a natural circulation evaporator, and showed its transfer function are approximated by the form having no self-regulation. Their floating speeds are strongly dependent upon solution temperature, and analytical results are in agreement with the experimental results. Furthermore, we applied the optimal control theory with quadratic performance index to the evaporator which is described by a linear multivariable system, and compared the results with the conventional control method neglecting interaction. The former which uses Direct Digital Control is superior to the latter especially in stability.

The salt effects on the vapour-liquid equilibrium for acetonitrile-water system were observed under atmospheric pressure. Four chlorides and three sulphates were used, and the systems containing the chlorides conformed two liquid phases.
For this system, the addition of LiC1 and CaC1
2 caused significant difference from the salt free data. Sulphates were not so much soluble in this system, and the addition of these salts did not affect appreciably except for the addition of Na
2SO
4 in the region of low acetonitrile concentration.
So, LiC1 and CaC1
2 are found to be effective to change the azeotropic point of the acetonitrile-water system.
