    During the course of an investigation on the solid fuel fired lime shaft kiln, experiments suggested that the kiln performance would to a great extent be limited by the facts that the velocity profiles of the descending feed would not be in keeping with these of the rising kiln gases, and especially that the channel formations of the upward kiln gases would occur.
    These happenings would militate against uniformity of products, improvement of efficiency and productivity in the kiln.
    In the previous paper (this journal, No. 74, pp. 274-280 (1964)) were reported some experimental data on the flow profile of descending feed, and there it was pointed out that there was an individuality in the flow pattern, solid feed having tended to move downward more slowly near the wall and the maximum downward velocity having been obtained between wall and axis of the kiln stack.
    This paper is on a farther study for the previous one and intends to report the effects of kiln structure on the flow pattern and intermingling phenomena of the descending solid burden. Some more knowledges on the subjects were obtained from the experimental work in which solid feed composed of the 9 colors painted, crushed limestones ranging from 10 mm to 20 mm in size was according to the color arranged at the previously quoted site in the kiln stack in rest, and with running of the kiln the discharged particles were grouped under color and weighed.
    In spite of the limited knowledges obtained, experimental results showed that the flow profiles and intermingling phenomena were largely related to the structure of kiln stack and discharging mechanism which should be balanced in mind for proper design and effective operation of the kiln. A great deal more work on the subject needs to be done for improving the present type of shaft kiln and especially for developing the fluid fuel fired lime shaft kiln.
