We investigated the microcellular foaming of polypropylene with supercritical nitrogen (N
2) in order to understand the most influential factors. In these experiments, an average diameter of 30μm, typically difficult to attain, was achieved for the foamed polypropylene. The most influential molding factors for the microcellular foaming process were found to be ΔP (the difference between the injection pressure of the supercritical N
2 in the cylinder and the back pressure of the screw), the throughput of the supercritical N
2 and the resin temperature.
