The rigidity of thermoplastic polymeric compositions is improved by addition of the glass fibers (GFs), but the brittleness is often offset. This is mainly due to the constraint of the deformation at GF/polymer interface. In this study the toughness of GF/polycarbonate (PC) composites was upgraded using with an acid-modified low molecular weight polyethylene (PE) modifier. At the fractured surface with the modifier, GFs were slipped out from the PC matrix, while without the PE modifier those were broken down. The elastic strain energy in the material under the deformation, UE and the released energy by the void formation, UP were investigated on the addition effect of PE modifier at GF/PC interface. Consequently, it was proved that the criterion for the stable deformation,|∂UE/∂V|<|∂UP/∂V|, was achieved in the GF/PC composites.
