A method, first to activate and then sulphurize iron and steel surface layer was invented. This layer, sulphurized in molten sulphur of low temperature (120-175°C), has special features hard to be broken away and of almost the same hardness and resistance to abrasion as those obtained by quenching.
By this method, which can be applied to almost all kinds of iron and steel and is more economical than other surface treatments, their hardness and resistance to abrasion and corrosion are increased, as well as water and soil are prevented from sticking to the surface.
If higher hardness is required, it is better to keep the temperature higher (175-450°C) so as to change the surface of iron and steel to FeS
