Generally, the multi-split-type A/C systems are designed based on managing temperature and humidity including outdoor air, which result in low evaporation temperature to manage humidity. We can expect large improvement on efficiency using our new high efficient desiccant system combined with high temperature evaporation type multi-type A/C by managing temperature and humidity separately. In this research, we establish a simulation tool to evaluate the energy-saving performance of this system. In this paper, we report the verification result between experimental result and simulation result using experimental data.

Characteristics of simple desiccant elements which constitute air flow channels separated by a thin desiccant sheet have been studied theoretically. The flow channels for treating air lie at right angles to that of drying air. Adsorption and desorption of humidity are conducted on both sides of the desiccant sheets simultaneously. Effects of treating and drying air flow rates, diffusion resistance of humidity in the desiccant sheets and air flow channel length on dehumidifying and temperature and enthalpy exchange efficiencies have been analyzed.

We developed the total heat exchange system of the thin rotor type with low pressure drop. The new system using the sorbent for the low temperature desorption was high performance. It was investigated the system performance in the summer conditions, such as outside of 35℃, 23g/kg(DA) and inside of 27℃, 11.7g/kg(DA). As the results, it was shown that the rotor parts of the system processed similarly the latent heat and sensible heat. It was indicated that the state of the each process was plotted on a straight line on the psychometric chart. We evaluated the heat distribution of the total heat exchange system in operation by the thermo camera. It was confirmed that the rotor end was the hottest by the adsorption-heat. The each efficiency was influenced by the rotational speed. It was indicated that the thin rotor system have the enthalpy efficiency of 79%, the temperature efficiency of 87%, the dehumidification efficiency of 76%.

The objective of this study is to develop a desiccant system using natural mesoporous material, Wakkanai siliceous shale. A honeycombed desiccant rotor containing this shale's powder and chlorides was made and evaluated. The dehumidification ability was 7〜15% higher than that of the silica-gel rotor. Amount of dehumidification gave 3.0〜5.6 g/kg_<DA> at the range of 0.5〜10 rpm. The rate of energy reduction to remove the outdoor air-conditioning load was estimated to be 50% by combination this rotor and a sensible heat exchanger. In addition, the rotor could dehumidify stably in the continuous test for a week.

The numerical model based on the performance tests on a desiccant wheel, which was developed by using Wakkanai siliceous shale, was presented, and the dehumidification performance was predicted from this model under the several conditions. They showed that the dehumidification amount increased with increasing the diameter, the cell number, and especially the length of the wheel. This wheel's dehumidification amount was estimated as 55% of the required dehumidification amount for the hottest day in Tokyo in 2008. The dehumidification amount of this wheel increased to 89% when a pre-cooling was employed to the system.

We designed and constructed the ventilation system of the dissecting table for decreasing formaldehyde concentration in the gross anatomy laboratory, by using the numerical simulation and visualization of the airflow around the dissecting table. This ventilation system prevents the diffusion of the formaldehyde gas from the dissecting table by covering that in the unidirectional airflow. The performance of this ventilation system was evaluated according to Industrial Safety and Health Act in Japan. As a result, we confirmed that formaldehyde concentration in the gross anatomy laboratory was much lower than the allowable value O.1ppm provided in Industrial Safety and Health Act in Japan.

Almost all office buildings are equipped with air-conditioning system now, and air-conditioning systems play an important role on airborne microbial contamination in an office building. In control of indoor airborne microbe concentration, it is indispensable to clarify the airborne bacterial and fungous concentration in supply air of an air-conditioning system. This study mainly reports the results obtained by detailed investigations about airborne bacterial and fungous concentration in supply air of air-conditioning system equipped in 22 office buildings located in Tokyo. Not only Cladosporium sp., Penicillium sp. and Aspergillius sp., but yeasts, Fusarium sp. which are hygrophilous fungi were isolated from supply air by high frequency. Moreover, at the buildings which are not so remarkable contaminated by microbes, it is not so difficult to satisfy the standard value of indoor airborne bacterium and fungus of the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJES-A002-2005). In other words, when indoor airborne bacterial or airborne fungous concentrations exceed the standard value, it means that a certain pollution source exists in the inside of an air-conditioning system or indoor.

The objective of this paper is working out the calculation model of chlorine dioxide (ClO_2) gas reaction rate constant in visible light by bag method. Experiments were conducted in a thermostatic chamber using a 20L Tedlar (polyvinyl fluoride) bag, which has a negligible adsorptive property against ClO_2 gas. The concentration of ClO_2 gas in the Tedlar bag was measured every one hour for six hours. Air temperature, relative humidity, absolute humidity and light illumination were set as experimental variables. It was found that high air temperature and light irradiation accelerated the decrease of ClO_2 gas concentration; the latter had the greatest influence on the decrease of ClO_2 gas concentration among the conditions examined. A mathematical expression as a function of air temperature and light intensity by fluorescent lamp contribute to ClO_2 gas absorption was proposed to predict reaction rate constant of ClO_2 gas.

We used horizontal push-pull airflow to exhaust patient's cough with droplet nuclei. The push-pull devices can use in a small room. We used 0.5μm dust as alternative droplet nuclei. The concentrations of 0.5μm dust were reduced less than 1/20 when the distance of push-pull devices was 1.5m. Our infection control system can reduce the risk of airborne infection in the existing consultation room.

In this study, we measured sterilization effect on the fungal spores Cladosporium herbarum and Fusarium solani as well as bacteria Bacillus subtilis using microwave oven. Three microwave powers (100W, 500W and 1000W) and five exposure time-steps (5sec, 1Osec, 20sec, 40sec and 60sec) were tested to find the most effective parameters of radiation which could be applied to humidifier filter in air conditioning system. The results showed that the degradation of studied microorganisms differed depending on their strains, power of microwave radiation and time of exposure. The responses of three strains from microwave radiation could be ranked in the following order of sensitivity: B. subtilis >C. herbarum >F. solani. The effect of microwave radiation for three strains were degraded more than 99% at 1000W of microwave power with more than 20sec. These results indicate that sterilization of microwave radiation for this study is potential tool for the control of contamination of harmful microorganisms to humidifier filter in air conditioning system.

New influenza pandemic had been broken around the world last year. Medical facilities, like hospitals, need to take action on building health. HVAC systems in hospital include all outdoor air system and recirculation air system. Because the latter doesn't need to place air-conditioning machines in ward, it has several advantages, for example, easy maintenance, without harmful effect to patients while filter replacement and so on. On the other hand, it can't be denied that there is fear of infection throughout returned air. Installing ID (In Duct)-UVGI (Ultra Violet Germicidal Irradiation) can become a preventive measure for the fear. In this study, measurements of microbes were conducted in a hospital whose HVAC system had ID-UVGI system. The surface disinfection effect in operating ID-UVGI system was confirmed.

The original purpose of control valve in HVAC system is to control amount of heat and its controllability is represented by thermal characteristic. Control valve only controls flow rate which is one of the factors affect thermal characteristic, but other factors also affect thermal characteristic like control method of secondary pump, valve authority, and differential pressure across a control valve. We investigated thermal characteristic in order to clarify the good controllability condition while changing these factors. As a result it shows good controllability conditions that differential pressure across the control valve is lower and secondary pump system is controlled by differential pressure constant control at the end of piping system.

To keep air-quality clean, ventilation is most important thing. The ventilation system has 2 type systems, one is central-system and another is package-system. The central-system can control ventilation rate using CO_2 monitor but the package-system doesn't, because of its high-cost. We have experimented application of low-cost semiconductor sensor to package-system to control ventilation rate. We report the correlation between semiconductor sensor output and CO_2 concentrate, and the result of energy saving by reducing ventilation rate.

The authors carried out a field measurement and simulation on the cooling and heating load of two office rooms of in Osaka University. Based on the result of field measurement, it was revealed that a considerable vertical temperature distribution is formed in the conditioned room during winter season. This results in smaller supply of heat than required and discomfort in the room. The simulation model was used to disaggregate the cooling and heating load into its sources. Those of outside walls and windows are dominant in the subject room. These result generally showed the importance of improvement in insulation of outside walls and windows.
