“Oukan” was established in order to create a forum where scientists and engineers of different disciplines gather and collaborate for better creation of products for society. At this moment, different disciplines cannot be integrated in scientific manner but done empirically, thus getting fraught with risks such as design with less optimality, overlook of potential danger, unexpected outbreak of burden to environment and creation of unnecessary things. In the present paper, we discuss human motivation (social wish) for creating knowledge which has been widely spread among people and might have guided the formation of necessary knowledge into diversified disciplines. It will be shown that the study on social wish will mitigate those risks.

As one of the initial proposers of the TRAFST (Transdisciplinary Federation of Science and Technology), I recall how the notion of the TRAFST was born and developed in the last decade. Some episodes are noted first that led to the establishment of the TRAFST. Fundamental notions that played important roles in my process of thinking are explained, that include “Applied engineering versus pure engineering,” “Third scientific revolution,” and “Science for design.”

This article describes the prospective and perspective discussions on the philosophy of Oukan (transdisciplinary science and technology) in our federation. We began to define our principle and establish the academic foundation of the federation. It is emphasized that our discussion started with the notion of “system science” and again returns to “system science.” This term must precisely present our target principle of activity. This article also reports the summary of the discussions and among presidents of themember societies about the outline and promotion of our activities in 10 years future.

In earthquake disaster conquest research, three working groups were organized and were assigned to a theme and four examination problems every group. I had a theme of “advancement of the management and the reinforcement of the toughness,” and WG-B repeated examination until the end of 2012. Including the report of Oukan symposium, I report the progress for the examination problem.

The Great East Japan Earthquake and the associated Tsunami destroyed sustainability of the vast area in Japan. The environment and the energy supply network have been heavily damaged by the earthquake, the tsunami and the radioactive discharges from the nuclear power plant. The recovery actions for the damages and the prevention to anticipated similar disasters in the near future are the most urgent tasks in every field of science and technology. TRAFST kicked off the special project combatting the disasters in three fields. This paper summarizes the activities ofWorking Group C on “Reinforcement in Environmental Conservation and Resilient and Robust Energy Supply Systems.”

The Japanese Society for the Science of Design was founded in 1953, and has currently over 2,500 members. The JSSD has been continuing the transdisciplinary studies from the beginning of establishment. We have regarded that the design studies are the value creation behavior for contributing to a human life and life culture. We are now the driving force behind International Association of Societies of Design Research. Although the field of design studies has been expanded and evolved with times, the further progress will be required at the time of the 60th anniversary.

The Operations Research Society of Japan (ORSJ) was established on June 15, 1957. In addition to pursuits as research on OR theory and the development of methodologies, the ORSJ explores the practical use of methods applicable to specific problems occurring in the world of business and government offices. It also actively promotes exchanges of information among its members as well as interaction on an international level.
