The determination, by means of isotope dilution analysis, of the molar ratio of 2, 4′-dimethoxybiphenyl-14C, 3, 4′-dimethoxybiphenyl-14C, 4, 4′-dimethoxybiphenyl-14C and p-methoxybiphenyl-14C formed through the reaction of N-nitgosoacet-p-anisidide-(phenyl-14C) in an equimolar mixture of anisole and benzene, is described. From the results, the partial rate factors of the ortho, meta and para positions of anisole for the homolytic p-methoxyphenylation were found to be 3.68, 1.03 and 1.31, respectively. Partial rate factors for toluene, 3.09, 1.00 and 1.18 were obtained from the results of experiments in a Taixture of toluene and benzene.

The determination, by means of isotope dilution analysis, of the molar ratio of p-nitrobiphenyl-14C, 2, 4′-dinitrobiphenyl-14C, 3, 4′-dinitrobiphenyl-14C, 4, 4′-dinitrobiphenyl-14C, 2-chloro-4′-nitrobiphenyl-14C, 3-chloro-4′-nitrobiphenyl-14C and 4-chloro-4′-nitrobiphenyl-14C formed through the reaction of N-nitrosop-nitroacetanilide-(pheny1-14C) in an equimolar mixture of nitrobenzene, chlo-robenzene and benzene, is described. From the results, the partial rate factors of the ortho, meta and para positions for the homolytic p-nitrophenylation were found to be 0.93, 0.35 and 1.53 for nitrobenzene and 1.53, 0.65 and 1.01 for chlorobenzene, respectively, the reactivity of the one position of benzene being taken as unity.

The determination, by means of isotope dilution analysis, of the molar ratio of 2-rpethoxy-4′-nitrobipheny1-14C, 3-methoxy-4′-nitrobiphenyl-14C, 4-methoxy-4′-nitrobiphenyl-14C and p-nitrobiphenyl-14C formed through the reaction of N-nitroso-p-rkitroacetanilide-(pheny1-14C) in an equimolar mixture of anisole and benzene, is described. From the results, the partial rate factors of the ortho, meta and para positions of anisole for the homolytic p-nitrophenylation were found to be 5.17, 0.84 and. 2.30, respectively. Partial rate factors for toluene, 3.28, 1.36 and 1.51 were obtained from the results of experiments in a mixture of toluene and benzene. From the sequence of the relative reactivities of the meta positions of aromatic compounds, it is suggested that the p-nitrophenyl radical has electrophilic character.
