JOURNAL FREE ACCESS7-Naphthalimide-1-naphthol-3-sulfonic acid (3) was obtained by the condensation of naphthalic anhydride with r acid in water at 130°C. By coupling (3) with diazotized aniline, sulfanilic acid, p-nitroaniline, o-anisidine, o-dianisidine, o-tolidine, 4-nitro-2-amino-phenol and 5-nitro-2-aminophenol in alkaline solutions, the corresponding azo dyes were prepared, and their properties were examined.
The fastness of these dyes to light was poor but that to washing and potting was fairly good in comparison with usual acid dyes. Especially after chroming the dyes using nitroamino phenol as diazo compononent fastness was improved.View full abstractDownload PDF (537K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe Friedel-Crafts acetylation of N-acetyl-o-toluidine (2) with acetyl chloride-aluminium chloride with and without carbon disulfide has been reported to give 4-acetamino-3-methylacetophenone (3) and 3-acetamino-4-methylacetophenone (5), respectively, as the main products. Reexamination of these reactions revealed that a 1 : 4.6 mixture of (3) and (5) was obtained in good yield in both cases.
The temperature and solvent dependences of this reaction were also examined. The maximum total yield (90%) of (3) and (5) was observed at 80°C without solvent. The products ratio (3) / (5) was found to be 1/4.54.9 in most runs.View full abstractDownload PDF (538K) -
