The recent advances in the preparation of acetic anhydride by carbonylation of methyl acetate and/or dimethyl ether using catalytic systems including Rh or Ni, and methyl iodide or some other catalysts are reviewed. In contrast with the case of methanol, modification of catalyst by combining with organic N-, P-, or As- compound improves the rate of reaction. The addition of cocatalysts, such as lithium salts and/or Cr (CO) ₆, also improves the activity of the catalyst.
The reaction mechanisms of these reactions are also discussed.
In connection with this reaction, the preparations of ethylidene diacetate, vinyl acetate and acetaldehyde are also mentioned.

It is important to use natural product as starting material or intermediate on the industrial production of stereospecifically comlicated substances which have physiologically active properties.
This article describes our recent studies on industrial production of vitamin E, vitamin K₁ and coenzyme Q₁₀ as the case of synthetic use of natural product on industrial process. These biopolyprenyl quinones, any of which are used as medicine, were produced with combined process of organic synthesis and extraction-purification from natural source especially from agricultural byproduct such as plant leaves.
Outline and strategy of synthetic use of natural product on industrial process were also summarized.

The reaction of 2, 4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNC) with the excess of dimethylthioformamide (DMTF) at 50°C gave N, N-dimethyl (dinitrophenylthio) methaneiminium chloride (1) as 1 : 1 adduct. Methanolysis of 1 gave 2, 4-dinitrothiophenol (2) at 20°C and gave bis (2, 4-dinitrophenyl) disulfide (3) at 50°C. Thermolysis of 1 suspended in xylene afforded 5-nitroben, zothiazol (5) in the presence of DMTF. Each product was selectively obtained in high yield.
