JOURNAL FREE ACCESSSeveral O-ethyl O-p-nitrophenyl substituted phenylphosphonates were prepared and the effects of the substituent on the alkaline hydrolysis were studied.
The rate of these phosphonates on hydrolysis were measured by detection of p-nitrophenoxide ion in a phosphate buffer at pH 8.3 at 45°C.

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe hydrogenolyses of thianthrene (1), phenoxathiin (2) and phenothiazine (3) over molybdenum trisulfide catalyst were carried out at 250-400°C under a pressure of 25-75 kg/cm2.
These compounds contain two hetero atoms S and X (X : S, O, or N). The results of intramolecular competitive hydrogenolyses of these compounds were compared with those with phenyl sulfide (4), phenyl ether (5) and diphenylamine (6) under the same conditions, and the ease or difficulty in the cleavage of C-S-C linkage in the presence or absence of C-X-C linkage was examined. The main conclusions from these results are as follows.
1. Proportions of the hydrogenolysis of C-S-C linkage were 100% in (1), (2) and (3) and 4.2% in (4) at 250°C, 50 kg/cm2 ; these data indicate that (1), (2) and (3) are more easily cleaved than (4).
2. The C-X-C linkage produced in reaction process of (1), (2) and (3) is more easily cleaved than that in (4), (5) and (6).
3. The ease of cleavage of C-X-C linkage decreased in the order of S>>O≥N.
4. The hydrogenolysis pathways of (1), (2) and (3) were suggested by comparing the relationship between the reaction conditions reaction products.View full abstractDownload PDF (863K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSSome new poly-s-triazinohydrazides which have an s-triazine ring in the main chain were prepared by meltpolymerization of 2, 4-dihydrazino-6-R-s-triazine (R= dialkylamino, phenyl, methyl) with diphenyl dicarboxylate i.e. C6H5OOCR'COOC6H5 (R'=- (CH2) 4-, - (CH2) 7-, - (CH2) 8-, - (CH2) 9-, - (CH2) 10-, 1, 4-phenylene, 1, 3-phenylene, 2, 5-pyridilene, 2, 6-pyridilene) and diphenyl carbonate. The polymer synthesized from diphenyl aromatic dicarboxylate were not high molecular compounds. Meltpolymerization of 2, 4-dihydrazino-6-dimethylamino (or methyl) -s-triazine with diphenyl dicarboxylate were crosslinked. The intrinsic viscosities of the polymer in formic acid ranged from 1.15-0.13 dl/g. The all of the polymers were dissolved in conc. sulfulic acid, nitric acid, and formic acid. The polymer with R=phenyl dissolved in aprotic polar solvents, too. In thermogravimetric analysis, polymer showed weight losses in nitrogen at 305-330°C. JOURNAL FREE ACCESS1-Methyl-3-methoxy-7-isopropylnaphthalene, the 3-methoxy derivative of eudalene, was synthesized from m-cresol. The Grignard reagent of 4-bromo-3-methylanisole (1) was converted to give 3- (4-methoxy-2-methylphenyl) succinic acid (4), which was dehydrated with P2O5 to give the acid anhydride (5). The Friedel-Crafts reaction of (5) using AlCl3 yielded 7-methoxy-5-methyl-1-oxo-1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydronaphthalene-3-carboxylic acid (6). 6-Methoxy-8-methyl-2- (1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl) -1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydronaphthalene (9), obtained by the reduction followed by the methylation of (6), yielded 1-methyl-3-methoxy-7-isopropylnaphthalene (10) along with the thiophene derivative (12) by heating with sulfur. The demethylation of (10) afforded 4-methyl-6-isopropyl-2-naphthol (11).View full abstractDownload PDF (802K) -
