The reaction of glycidyl methacrylate with phenols or of phenyl glycidyl ether with methacrylic acid in the presence of basic catalyst has been studied to prepare pure 2-hydroxy propyl methacrylates without side reaction.
Triethylbenzyl ammonium chloride has been found to be an excellent catalyst, and 2-hydroxy propyl methacrylates were obtained in high yield when the reaction was performed at 85-90°C.
2, 3-Diphenoxy propyl methacrylate, 2 (or 3) -phenoxy propyl-1, 3 (or 1, 2) -dimethacrylate and 3-phenoxy-1, 2-propanediol were identified as by-products when the reaction was carried out in the presence of KOH, LiOH or triethylamine.
