The purpose of product family analysis is to find an appropriate balance between the mix of variants in a product family and the need for reconfiguration and new investments in the manufacturing system. This paper give an overview of a framework (The Abstract Factory Framework) to support product family analysis based on product- as wells as manufacturing system aspects. A case - the machining of an automotive knuckle - will be used to exemplify the use and the benefits of the framework. One of the benefits is the automatic generation of process sequence in order to easily test scenarios of different combinations of product family and manufacturing system configurations.
