In electrical discharge machining, processing accuracy was effected by behaviors of fused material. Fused material behaviors depend on the pressure during electrical discharge. The mechanism of pressure occurrence was needed to clear. In this study, pressure was measured by optical fiber sensor during single pulse discharge. Gap region medium viscosity was changed by medium and temperature. As the results, bubble collapse was only occurred with low viscosity. In the case of low viscosity, it was found that bubble collapse time was increased as discharge current increased without viscosity.

This study analyzed the electromagnetic field around the wire electrode in wire-EDM to clarify the influence of the electromagnetic force generated by the electromagnetic field on the vibration of the wire electrode. Comparison between solid brass wire and steel wire coated with brass layer showed that thicker brass layer results in smaller vibration of the wire under the same discharge current. On the other hand, when the same pulse generator settings such as open voltage and internal resistance were used, thicker brass layer resulted in larger current passing through the wire. Thus the electromagnetic force acting on the coated wires was larger, leading to larger vibration of the wires.

Diamond cutting tool shows severe wear in turning of ferrous metals. On the other hand, it is reported that a nitriding steel show less wear. However, the mechanism of wear suppression is not clarified. In this paper, aiming at the suppression of wear of single point diamond cutting tool, analyses of wear mechanism in cutting of iron and nitriding iron were carried out using ab-initio molecular dynamics calculation. The results suggest that interaction between carbon atoms on tool surface and iron atoms on workpiece surface is suppressed by nitriding.

To obtain scientific guidelines for ductile-mode machining of silicon carbide (SiC), molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of nano-machining of SiC were carried out using three models. Firstly, in a simulation of nano-machining with a rigid diamond tool, amorphous phase transformation is inevitable for ductile-mode machining of SiC. Secondly, to investigate the tool wear and chipping phenomena, the rigid tool was replaced by dynamic one. In the simulation of nano-machining with the dynamic tool, no chip removal was observed due to a severe tool wear and a cutting edge chipping. Finally, to reduce stresses act on the tool, an amorphous layer was pre-formed on a surface to be cut in the third model. In the simulation, ductile-mode chip removal was observed as a result of the continuous and stable plastic flow by a shearing deformation in the amorphous region without the cutting edge chipping. Furthermore, the wear decreases by applying cutting fluid and slower cutting speed. However, the tool wear is still severe for cutting with single point cutting edge. In practice, to realize effective ductile-mode machining of SiC, it is recommended that mono-crystalline SiC should be pre-formed to amorphous SiC on the surface to be cut and grinded with lubricant.

This paper describes the influence of Na2SO4 electrolyzed oxidizing water on the surface of pure nickel. First, we threw light on the etching characteristic of Na2SO4 electrolyzed oxidizing water on the surface of pure nickel by the comparative immersion experiments with NaCl electrolyzed oxidizing water and H2SO4 solution. The results show that as for the etching effects on pure nickel, Na2SO4 electrolyzed oxidizing water is same as the NaCl electrolyzed oxidizing water and becomes stronger than H2SO4 solution. Next, we threw light on the influence of Na2SO4 electrolyzed oxidizing water on the surface shape of pure nickel, by the observation using the SEM and the AFM image. The results indicated that Na2SO4 electrolyzed oxidizing water did not have a big influence on the surface shape of pure nickel. Na2SO4 electrolyzed oxidizing water does not have chloride ion, unlike NaCl electrolyzed oxidizing water. Therefore, Na2SO4 electrolyzed oxidizing water is wide in the application scope, compared with NaCl electrolyzed oxidizing water.

SiO2 films have been prepared by oxidizing n-type Si(001) wafers using atmospheric-pressure (AP) 0.5.5%O2 /He plasma at 300.450°C. Structure, chemical composition, thickness and refractive index of the oxide films are investigated by infrared absorption spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ellipsometry, respectively. Moreover, the electrical property of SiO2/Si interface is analyzed by capacitance.voltage measurement of Al/SiO2/Si capacitor. The results show that the low-temperature AP plasma oxidation process is capable of producing high-quality SiO2 films applicable for surface passivation of n-type Si surfaces.

We have reported in the last meeting that Ti-Ni-Cu films deposited at an elevated temperature shows shape memory behavior in the as-deposited state. The purposes of this work are to establish the fabrication method of micro-devices (such as diaphragm or cantilever) and to evaluate their performance. We have confirmed that the operation temperature of devices seem to be the same as the transformation temperature of the self-standing Ti-Ni-Cu films having the identical chemical composition.

Now, the most of lubrication methods of the bearing is grease one. However, the grease cannot participate in lubrication when scattered in a bearing so that fluidity is small in comparison with the lubricating oil. In addition, there is the performance investigation example of grease in itself to date, but there are few date about the behavior. Then, in the present study, I produce the experimental device and can observe behavior of the grease in the bearing. I put below a result. I grasped a tendency of the scattering of the grease and correlation with the temperature of the inner circle of bearing.

In the machine tools to suppress expansion of ball screw shaft by rising temperature, it has been widely adopted forced cooling using hollow ball screw. However, to the hollow shaft of the ball screw requires a special process, had become a problem in terms of cost and lead time. To solve these problems we developed a nut cooling ball screw. We will present an overview of these.

The action of grasp is one of indispensable functions in living daily life without hindrance. The purpose of this study is to develop a power-assist glove that is mounted on a user′s hand and supports the grasp. The power-assist glove with air pressure actuators controls the grip strength based on the magnitude of a surface myoelectric potential generated by moving fingers. As a result of experiments, the device enabled the user to give a supplementary power for grasping the objects.

Transfer from wheelchair to bed is difficult for wheelchair users without assistance. Because they must lift their body up and move from wheelchair to bed by themselves. Some lifts or assist systems called transfer aids are developed to help transfer, nevertheless they need assistance. Lifts need large space to use and it is hard to carry. To attach the transfer aids, wheelchair need to be modified. The aim of our study is to develop a transfer aids by self-help model that wheelchair users can use easily. This transfer aids can attach to wheelchair without improvement. And it can be carried easily so wheelchair users can use it everywhere. We developed the spread mechanism that user feel trouble-free to spread the transfer aid. Only by the simple motion of the lever, wheelchair users can spreads the transfer aid.

A prototype of driving force measurement system for wheelchair was developed and tested, using the giant magnetostrictive material. In the preceding research, such measurement system using a magnetostrictive torque sensor had been developed, but its excessive width and weight may affect the measurement results. To solve this problem, the measurement system using the giant magnetostrictive material was developed. The width was same as the original wheel and the weight became a half of it, and measurement of driving force and velocity was confirmed.

Electric wheelchairs are effective devices for promotion of independence of the elderly. However, the increase in number of accidents is reported as more people use them. One of the causes is tendency turning downhill on cross slope. There is a risk of popping out on roadways. In this study, we tried to suppress that tendency with a vibration gyro sensor equipped on our steer-by-wire type electric wheelchair.
