This study deals with the reduction of coolant in cylindrical plunge grinding. A brush-nozzle is placed in order to block ′air-belt′ which is boundary layer on the wheel surface, and it helps the coolant adhere to the wheel surface. This study confirms that the quantity of coolant can be reduced from 10 l/min to 0.4 l/min by using the brush-nozzle. In addition, the brush-nozzle is effective in reducing grinding force and generation of smooth ground surface.

Improvement of polishing performance against the hard-to-work material is required to realize high throughput manufacturing process of the wafers. Recently, Doi has reported new polishing technology of the high efficiency polishing methods of the materials assisted by plasma. In this method, it is difficult to use conventional polishing device because of microwave resistance. We develop new nano carbon particle formed by UV laser irradiation against fullerenol and diamond particles for the polishing method and will report our experimental results.

The volume phase holographic (VPH) grating achieves high angular dispersion and very high diffraction efficiency for the first diffraction order and for S or P polarization. However the VPH grating could not achieve high diffraction efficiency for non-polarized light at a large diffraction angle and for higher diffraction order. The birefringence binary Bragg (3B) grating is a thick transmission grating with optically anisotropic material such as lithium niobate or liquid crystal. The 3B grating achieves diffraction efficiency up to 100% for non-polarized light by tuning of refractive indices for S and P polarizations, even on higher diffraction orders. The quasi-Bragg (QB) grating, which consists long rectangle mirrors aligned in parallel precisely such as a window shade, also achieves high diffraction efficiency toward higher orders. The quasi-Bragg immersion (QBI) grating has smooth mirror hypotenuse and reflector array inside the hypotenuse. The incident beam of the QBI grating reflects obliquely at a reflector, then reflects vertically at the mirror surface and reflects again at the same reflector. We are going to fabricate conventional silicon and germanium immersion gratings with step-like grooves by means of the latest diamond machining methods. We would introduce characteristics and performance of these gratings.

In this paper, the focusing performance of an ellipsoidal neutron focusing mirror is evaluated by using neutron beams generated from CN3 beam port at Kyoto University Research Reactor (KUR-CN3). KUR-CN3 can generate a wavelength of neutrons from 0 to 10 Å, with a peak intensity at wavelength of 2.7 Å. To well focus the neutron beams, an aperture and slit are fabricated by using Cadmium. The aperture, which dominates the size of incident beam, is set to 1 mm in diameter by considering the intensity of cold neutrons. The U-shape slit. is designed by following the shape of incident beam to the mirror, and is used to shield the unnecessary beams. For collecting the data, a Register network Photo Multiplying Tube type detector (RPMT) which is capable of doing pulse neutron spectrometry with 2D Position sensitive and counting mode is adopted. The results show that the neutron beams are well focused by the mirror. The focusing spot size at FWHM is 1.050 mm and 1.047 mm in vertical and horizontal direction, which is almost equivalent to the size of aperture. From the 3D view of focused neutron beam, no significant diffuse scattering can be found.

Large reflecting mirrors are used for X-ray telescope in the astronomical space. The large thin mirrors are produced by molding with diamond turned and polished molds made of electroless nickel. The electroless nickel is amorphous material and can be machined to mirror surface. In order to machine more precisely, it is important decrease the tool wear. In this study, the thin electroless nickel and electro nickel are diamond-turned to evaluate the tool wear and machining accuracies. In the experiments, the nickels are single-point diamond turned and the tool wear ratio and the surface roughness were evaluated.

Needs of precision optical mirrors are increasing in the astronomical space telescope. In the space having extremely large temperature differences, the aspheric optical mirror made of low thermal expansion ceramic is very effective in reducing the focus errors due to the thermal expansion. In order to develop the mirror made of low thermal expansion ceramic, parabolic mirror of the ceramic is ground and polished to test. By the grinding and polishing test, changes of form deviation profiles and surface roughness profiles are evaluated and feasibility is studied.

We have developed multi-degrees of freedom forceps which has one degree of bending and one degree of tip rotation freedom with small USAD used in laparoscopic surgery. However, the original USAD whose diameter is 12mm and length is 57mm is still large for laparoscopic surgery. In this study, we developed a small USAD with a diameter of 8mm and a length of 35.5mm, which has a vibration speed of 6m/s at the resonant frequency of more than 100 kHz. Ex-vivo experiment is performed and at the vibration velocity of 5m/s in which meat materials can be successfully cut off.
