It is necessary to estimate the cutting force accurately in order to predict chatter vibrations. In this research, dynamic cutting force coefficients are obtained from shaper cutting experiments. The depth of cut is varied periodically either by tool oscillation or by cutting a wavy workpiece. The experiments show that the dynamic cutting force direction is different from the static one. The phase lead of the main cutting force to the chip thickness variation becomes larger as the average depth of cut is increased or as the wave length is shortened when cutting a wavy workpiece without tool oscillation.

A novel diaphragm-control restrictor (DCR) is proposed for improving the performance of the hydrostatic-bearing spindle used in the precision grinding machine. Unique functions of the proposed DCR is its adjustability for the restrictor characteristic. By changing the restrictor resistance of the DCR, the effect of the active control can be altered. The proposed DCR is incorporated into hydrostatic radial bearings of the work spindle of the precision grinding machine, then the static and dynamic performances of the spindle are analyzed. The results of the analyses show that the static stiffness of the spindle can be incresed to be infinite, and the dynamic compliance shows that the effect of the active control can be observed up to 20Hz. These results show that the proposed DCR is useful for improving the performance of the hydrostatic-bearing spindle in the precision applications.

The stiffness at contacted interface has a large influence on the stiffness of machine tool supports. In this research, two methods are attempted to change the stiffness of the support by changing the contact stiffness. One is to tilt the interface and the other is to insert thin foils between the interfaces. The stiffness of the support was decreased by 50% with the interface tilted by 45 degrees. The stiffness of the support tended to increase with inserts of aluminum foil and tin foil.

High accuracy aspheric mirrors and lenses with large dimension are widely used in the huge telescopes and other industry filed. But measuring method of large aspheric optical surface isn′t confirmed. The goal of our research is to measure the profile of large aspheric optical surface with accuracy of about 50 nm. We developed the autocollimator with CMOS as light receive element (CMOS type AC).The autocollimator′s measuring range is wide. In this report, we developed LED-CMOS type AC whose light source is LED. And we proposed the angle sensor which can measure small curvature radius by using light ray trace simulation.

We had applied profile measurement using an inclinometer for evaluating the alignment of our linear particle accelerator for a distance up to 206 m and demonstrated that profile measurement based on angle detection is valid for precise evaluation of longer profile. Here, we consider a method using a gyro for detecting angles in place of the inclinometer for applying it in horizontal plane. We investigate for eliminating drift of the gyro, which is considered to be the major factor for errors.

The purpose of this study is to measure a spindle error motions with 5 degree of freedom (DOF), concurrently. An ideal spindle must have only rotational motion with 1 DOF, therefore another motions with 5 DOF (= radial motions (2DOF) + axial motion (1DOF) + angular motions (2DOF)) are parasitic and unnecessary errors for spindles. In previous article, we measured a spindle motion for 2 DOF by using a concentric circle grating which is fixed on the spindle top and an optical sensor which can obtain 2 axes displacements. In this report, we made a compact and rigid optical sensor and checked its performance.

The purpose of this research is to develop hi-speed and hi-accuracy multi-axis machining system. We proposed two methods and adapted them to 3 axis machining. One is geometric interpolation and the other is predictive error compensation. It is evident that two methods are able to realize hi-accuracy and hi-speed 3-axis machining. This report refers to the concept of basic system which is multi-axis machining system based on these method.

In this research, we proposed a wide band cutting force estimation method in ball screw driven stage using full-closed control. To estimate cutting force, servo information of the drive system such as motor current reference, motor rotation angle, and also stage position response is used. Simulation result indicates that the proposed method enables to estimate accurately around resonance frequency of the ball screw in an axial direction. From the experimental results in milling process under acceleration/deceleration of the stage, it is confirmed that cutting force is estimated depending on tooth pass frequency without the influence of acceleration/deceleration of the stage.
