Sporophytes are newly found in Clastobryopsis brevinervis from Yakushima Island, southern Japan, and are described in detail. One of the most distinctive features is the perforation of the peristome teeth, which suggests a close relationship to other species of the genus.
The effect of sugar on the growth of moss protonema was investigated using five-cell protonema segments of Pohlia flexuosa under both light (14L:10D) and dark conditions. Under dark conditions, the protonema did not grow in the mannitol containing media or sugar-free media; however, some growth was observed in the media containing glucose and sucrose. Under light conditions, the active growth of the protonema was observed in all four media. However, the protonema grew less on media containing glucose compared to the other three media.
