A new moss species, Distichophyllum yakumontanum H. Akiyama & Matsui from Yakushima Isl., southern Kyushu, Japan, is described. The species is most closely related to D. catinifolium J. Froehl., but differs in having obovate to oblong-spatulate leaves with round to shortly mucronate apices and its unique habitat, that is, growing on tree trunks on the forest floor.
