It has been known that hyperthyroidism is influential to the skeletal bones, but there are few description on osseous changes in the jaw bones. Two cases of hyperthyroidism were presented in this study.
The first case was a 23-year-old woman. Her symptoms were nervousness, exophthalmos, and enlargement of the thyroid gland of 5 years' duration. Laboratory studies disclosed an elevation of ALP (12 K-A units), but other data were within normal limits. Thyroidal uptake of
123I showed 84.4% for 3 hours, 91.8% for 6 hours, and 95.9% for 24 hours. Thyroidal scintigram revealed a diffuse concentration of
131I.
The second case was a 35-year-old man. His symptoms were easy fatigue, palpitation, nervousness, and enlargement of the thyroid gland. Levels of ALP was elevated to 36 K-A units, but other laboratory data were within normal limits.
Coarse cortex bone, osteoporotic pattern of trabeculation, and discontinued lamina dura were disclosed in both cases of jaw bones roentgenologically. In the second case, osteitis fibrosa and osteoporosis were seen in the mandibular alveolar bone pathologically.
