    Transformation of kaolin minerals on heating is reviewed. On the endotherm at about 600°C, near-neighbour (OH) interaction takes place and water molecules produced are expelled. The structure is much distorted and Al (O, OH)6 octahedra change into distorted tetrahedra. This anhydrous phase is called metakaolin. On the faint endotherm preceding the 980°C exotherm, counter migration of Si and Al takes place resulting in segregation of SiO2-rich and Al2O3-rich domains. They crystallize into γ-Al2O3 or γ-Al2O3 plus mullite accompanying intense exothermic effect at about 980°C. Recent development of NMR and ESR spectroscopy has provided us with useful tools for studying minerals, especially amorphous or poorly crystalline ones. The result of NMR and ESR for heating products of kaolinite confirms the thermal transformation outlined above.

    In the application X-ray Rietveld analysis, there is a problem which is not yet solved. As well known, the Rietveld analysis is based on the least squares method, so it is impossible to solve the unknown structure by using this method only. In order to obtain valuable information of unknown structures it is necessary to introduce Fourier synthesis method into the Rietveld process. For this purpose, Rietveld system is tried to combine with UNICS III system which includes many useful programs for single crystal structure analysis. Both systems are designend to be easily connected by simple TSS operations. An application example of the system to the crystal structure analysis of zeolite L is given and compared with the result given by Barrer and Villiger.

    Single crystals of andradite, having the morphology of tetragon-trioctahedron, were found in sandstone bed and skarn-pebbles therein of typical Triassic Ladinian formation at Kurobayama, Onoda city, Yamaguchi Prefecture, west Japan. The largest crystal is 1.5 cm across and 3.78 g in weight. An example of chemical analyses for the andradite is given as follows :(Ca22.65Mg0.11Fe0.662+Mn0.40)23.82(Fe15.963+Al0.14)16.10Si24.02O96.00Lattice parameter. 12.042 Å, specific gravity 3.58, refractive index 1.8830 and magnetic susceptibility 60×10-6 emu/g are obtained. The growth, dislocation and deformation history of this garnet was analysed from the surface microtopographic features left on the as-grown surface. The finding of this garnet suggests the existence of skarn-type ore deposit and its related acidic plutonism during the periods between late Permian and middle Triassic in the western region of Yamaguchi Prefecture.
