    Carbonation of slaked lime, mineral name portlandite, has been studied in air at moderately high temperatures ranging from 200°C to 550°C with variable heating time up to 72 h. Formation of calcite was observed for every run, accompanied with some remaining portlandite at low temperatures and quicklime at high temperatures due to surface-limited reaction between source materials and carbon dioxide included in air as much as 330-340 ppm. The maximum yield of calcite was 73.3 percent in the experimental condition. The 51.1 percent yield reached by 450°C heating in 6 h is regarded to have a high potential of practical applications for preventing the greenhouse effect. The reaction rate resulted were interpreted in terms of kinetics, applying the Jander equation. As a consequence, 125.7 kJ/mol was obtained for the apparent activation energy of reaction by the Arrehnius plots.

    This paper reviews the fields indicated by the title, which emphasizes the recent work by authors. It is possible to prepare pure β-dicalcium silicate (Ca2SiO4) without adding a stabilizer having a remarkably large specific surface area of about 7 m2 /g by decomposition of hillebrandite(Ca2(SiO3)(OH)2) at 600°C. The hillebrandite is hydrothermally synthe-sized using lime and quartz with Ca/Si=2.0 at 200-250°C. The hydration rate of the β-dicalcium silicate is extremely rapid. For water/solids ratio of 0.5, the hydration reaction is completed in 28 d cured at 25°C and 24h at 80°C. The silicate anion structure of C-S-H (Calcium Silicate Hydrate Gels) consists mainly of a dimer and a single-chain polymer. The C-S-H has an oriented fibrous structure and exhibits a 0.73-nm dreierketten in the longitudinal direction.

    Solid-liquid interfacial reactions between amorphous aluminosilicate and heavy metal ions, especially Zn(II), were studied by two different ways: potentiometry and spectroscopic methods. A new potentiometry was proposed and applied to reveal that Zn(II) ions form inner-sphere complex between aluminol groups on the surface of amorphous aluminosilicate. As for spectroscopic method, XAFS(X-ray Absorption Fine Structure) and Mössbauer spectroscopy were applied. These methods gave direct information about chemical states of heavy metal ions on the surface of wet solids. The combination of potentiometric and spectroscopic methods can be promising tools to study solid-liquid interfacial reactions.

    A powder diffractometer for synchrotron radiation with multiple-detector system (MDS) has been built for rapid scanning of high-resolution diffraction intensity. Its optic design is based on a flat-specimen reflection geometry using asymmetric 2θ scanning at a fixed incident angle. The MDS has five detector arms, which are set radially on a rotary table at 25° intervals, and can scan five segments of a whole-powder pattern simultaneously. Performances of the powder diffractometer with MDS are described in the present report.
