The 2014 annual conference of the Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan (IEIJ) will be held in Saitama University. Tokyo Branch of IEIJ planned a special issue. The main contents are as follows: New Sights of Light-up in Tokyo, Working of Electricity Saving's Lighting Environment, Illumination Forum 2011 through 2013 Activity Contents Report, etc.
Tokyo Gate Bridge, nicknamed Dinosaur Bridge because of its shape, opened to traffic on February 12, 2012. A light-up was held on April 25 of the same year. Symbolic lighting was designed to enhance the peculiar form of this bridge that serves as a new gateway to Tokyo. Various committees executed detailed examinations for this major public structure; maritime experts carried out studies to prevent interference with shipping; bridge design and construction experts were consulted. Overall planning and design took nine years to complete. As a result, each truss is lit individually; light dispersion from color LEDs on the sides of the bridge is tightly controlled; bridge footings and the underside of the span are attractively lit. In particular, colors of LEDs used to light the sides are changed each month to give a seasonal feel; every hour on the hour light variations give the impression of waves; thus the overall lighting is dynamic. In consideration of the environment and energy conservation, solar power is used for about 40 percent of the scenic lighting. In autumn 2013, the lighting design of Tokyo Gate Bridge received the Award of Excellence from Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA).
The 100-year-old, red-brick building, Tokyo Station was recently preserved and restored. The lighting design concept is "Peaceful Scenery". This gentle and dramatic nightscape has been completed by ecological and precise lighting methods with collaboration among the clients, contractors and lighting designers. Suitable lighting source for each architectural material was carefully selected and LED was adapted for all 100% fixtures. Tokyo station shows a good example of facade lighting which is called "makeup for beautiful lady".
This article is an outline of the lighting plan for "GranRoof' as one of new main sight in Tokyo. I introduce the best viewpoint for the facade lighting and explain the lighting philosophy, lighting process concerning building complex in Tokyo Station Yaesu Area as new urban entrance.
I report the activity contents of the illumination forum from 2011 through 2013. 2011 "Hikari who lights a person", 2012 "Tokyo Akaritoridori"〜The future of the town which Hikari makes〜, 2013 "Sense〜Light and sound to stimulate a heart〜", I reported activity contents at each age and looked back toward a forum more each than each chairperson.
