In this paper, assuming that a local area is a system, we have discussed “the revitalization of a local area and the diagnosis of its management.” In order to treat a local area as a system and as a target for management diagnosis, we must presuppose the following: (1) definition of its system boundary, (2) organization of the area and (3) quantitative evaluation of its resources and assets. Provided that these requirements are being met, use of visual representation tools like BSC-based strategy maps may well enable us to draw for organization and control of the area a strategic scenario in which national visions are to be broken down schematically into the roles to be played by individuals and organizations constituting an integral part of the system.

Existing theories on competitive strategies tend to focus on ways to capture more profits than other companies in the same industry. Since the market size for many industries in Japan has not been growing in recent decades, however, competition for allocations of overall sales in the industry is likely to become fierce. This is particularly so in the knowledge economy where those who have expertise tend to have power, and many products require expert knowledge or experience. Customers who have little knowledge or experience are considered unwilling to pay for those products requiring expert knowledge or experience. Therefore, customer value for the customers who have expertise and experience is important in the knowledge economy. The existing theories on competitive strategies, however, tend to focus on company's resources or activities before considering the customer value. Instead, efficiency or profitability for a company has been pursued in the existing theories. This paper views the slackened growth of the market size as a result of failure to consider customer value. A comparison case study between two companies with/and without the customer value perspective in the stagnant Japanese movie industry is presented. The company with the customer value perspective attempted to capture more payments from the customers who have expertise and experience, and achieved more revenues than the company without the perspective. The other company focused on vertical integration within the industry in order to capture more profits and it pursued customers who have little knowledge or experience. Furthermore, the company with the customer value perspective has increased the size of the movie market. The result suggests that the strategist's art is considering from a customer value perspective to increase revenues of a company and of the industry, before focusing on the existing theories.

Many companies exceeding foundation 100 years remain in Japan. There were many companies born especially after the Edo period, and we summarized the management characteristic of those companies. The method is the analysis which used the balanced scorecard. We analyzed the merchant's family of the Edo period from the viewpoint of financial affairs, a customer's viewpoint, the viewpoint of an internal process, and the viewpoint of study. What should be mentioned especially is having contributed to society simultaneously, though the merchant's family of Edo gives top priority to the side of financial affairs. It is one of the secrets of the long life that the company efficiently employed in society has done the deed good for society. And we propose realization of the society which can continue as a new competition axis of a company. There is Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as a policy for the realization. The bottom of the view has coexistence of a competitive advantage and sustainability. Just the company which does sincere management to society can turn into a long-life company.

In this paper, we will focus our attention on the potentialities of ICT for regenerating regional communities and the challenges that we need to address in its utilization. Since administrative measures implemented for regional regeneration in Japan are complicated and diverse in nature, ICT applied to each individual measure will not necessarily be able to contribute to the realization of their specific objectives. Theoretically correct regeneration systems might be constructed with proper goal definition and/or system border redefinition and with free use of economic theories and/or ICT. However, after all, their end-users are local citizens. If these systems are to achieve a measure of success in regional regeneration, it will be imperative for as many citizens as possible to share system goals. Therefore, if ICT is utilized to promote citizens' goal sharing, it is expected to play a major practical role in regenerating regional communities.

They sometimes confront some difficult problems and issues such as cost increase, customer claims, business process inefficiency, and staff demotivation and moral hazard. They attempt business process improvement to solve these problems and issues. The author selects a case study of business process improvement in expansion of a small retail company to research the cause and effect mechanism between business process improvement and its effectiveness by applying some existing theories. McCormack and Johnson (2001) researched the relationship between business process and IT investment, and Iijima (2010) insists the importance of “business process orientation” for acquiring the effect from IT Investment. The result of this research corresponds with these theories, which was conducted by a case study of business process improvement in expansion of a small retail company. Based upon a multiple indicators model, results indicated that organizational business creed was related to uniqueness of the organization, uniqueness of the organization was related to employees’ identification with their organization. Additionally, organizational identification was positively related to the employees’ contextual performance within the organization. The results of multiple group analysis showed the theoretical model of the process was not different by the difference of status.
