It is common to use on-line geographical databases for handling geographic information. For example, GeoNames is a free database for geographic information and Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that contains information of many geographic entities. However, since there is not enough linked information among these databases, it is not easy to combine the information stored in the both database. In this paper, we propose a method to find the corresponding entry between Wikipedia and GeoNames for constructing large Geographic database. In this approach, we made set of rules that represents the relationship between Wikipedia category information and feature class of GeoNames. We also propose a method to find out the corresponding Wikipedia's Geo-entities and GeoNames by using information of class correspondence, name, and country as constraints for matching.

The retirement of baby boomers already started in IHI. Many of them have extremely sophisticated skill of production engineering and empirical knowledge based on long and ripe experience about engine development and repair. On the other hand, the many of younger generation have uncertain knowledge on production engineering. We have started the "TORANOMAKI" (the bible of arts) activities in order to improve this situation and pass on veteran's knowledge to younger generation. We developed the "TORANOMAKI" system using "HOZO ontology building tool", "Google earth", "Magpie" and "Marginalia" to transfer the sophisticated production engineering and empirical knowledge to younger generation. The "TORANOMAKI" is the book in ancient China which describes the theory of strategy on war. The most of Japanese know this name as the key to their success.

In this study, we built an ontology for a biological phenomenon, programed cell death. In our ontology, each biological event in the phenomenon is composed of chain reactions containing biopolymers as minimal components. Therefore, we identified chain reactions and causality between events. We also classified functions that biopolymer interactions offer into two types. One of the types is defined as an elementary function which is composed of biopolymers, and the other as a mechanical function which is composed of elementary functions.

In the research field of sustainable use of ecosystem services and biodiversity conservation, there is a real need for establishing integrated platform of universal scientific and local traditional knowledge for ecosystem management. Against this background, this study works on developing an ontology based intelligent information system. In this paper, a case study of quercus decaying problem was conducted, and perspectives of ontology application to GIS system and of regional instance matching concept were shown.

The color research has much interest in exploring an emotional response to a color stimulus, which is referred to as color emotions. In general, knowledge on color emotions is represented as statistical models, and be implemented in computer-based systems such as a communication agent. In this paper, we ontologically specifed basic concepts of perceptual quantities, color space and statistical models. We then discuss how our ontology can improve interaction between human and computer based on communication strategy which is proposed in Human-Robot Interaction.
