Investigations using official data on characteristics of farm accidents from 1975 to 1981 in Niigata Prefecture compared with those in the whole country revealed that accidents related to combind harvesters in September were most frequent and that the second and third worst ones occurred in May in relation to tractors and rice transplanting machines. These peculiarities seem to reflect the structural properties of agriculture in this Prefecture, which are largely specified into mono-cropping of rice.
Secondarily, fault tree analysis of two examples cased in 1981 at Tokamachi City suggested the necessities to adopt some accident prevention countermeasures, chiefly concerned with the improvement of workplace conditions and safety devices of machinery.
