The modified Karlovitz theory was applied to flaznt stability in high-speed flow. In such a flow, the Recirealtion Zone plays an important role in the flame stability of the flame holder (for example, bluff bodies). The authors conducted research theoretically and physicall to explais the time ignition lag τ
B, and the experimental facts. and carried out further studies of the influence of the preheat temperature on τ
B. The eects of pressure of the coes bustible gas on τ
B are also discussed.

Apparent rate of hydrogenation of benzene on the T-61 catalyst (Ni catalyst supported on silica with third components) was measured under various operating conditi in a differential reactor. The rate data were summarized by a Hougen-Watson type expression
To obtain extremely high-purity cyclohexane, produce distribution by side reactions was experimentally studied. It was concluded that the effect of reaction temperature on formation of paraffinic impurities was the most improtant factor. Life test on T-61 catalyst with high-purity benzene was made. The catalytic activity was found to decay experimentally with total amount of benzene converted to cycle hexane during the reaction time.

For hydrogenation of benzene accompanying high heat of reaction, temperature profiles of catalytic fixed-bed reactor were measured in a test plant. With the information obtained on the rate and physical properties of the fixed bed, it was possible to analyze the reactor performances by simulation based on a two-dimensional diff erential model. In the computations, Crank-Nicolson's fi nite difference method was employed and the results were in good agreement with experiments for various operating conditions.
To obtain optimum temperature profile by diminishing the maximum temperature peak, control of the catalytic activity by mixing inactive solid with the catalyst was examined and proved effective.
As the catalytic activity decayed with reaction time, a computation to show time effect on longitudinal temperature profile was made. The results indicate that the maximum temperature peak would diminish with time, while the over-all conversion is kept constant.

The authors examined experimentally the effect of free convection accompanied by hydrolysis of acetic anhydride in vertical and inclined tubular reactors. Seven kinds of reactor were used, having different diameter, length and inlet or outlet conditions. The experiments were carried out in the range of low Reynolds (Re=3-38). However, it was found that free convection accompanied by the reaction occurred in the reactor, i.e., by-pass, circular and eddy fl ows occurred due to the increase of liquid density with the reaction. It was shown that the conversion of acetic anhydride was determined by the scale and the stability of by-Pas flow region.

De-entrainment characteristics of a perforated-plate column with 124mm diameter and 5 plates have been studied experimentally in steam-water system.
The results illustrate that more than 95% of the entrainment is removed in the bottom plate of the column. Deentrainment efficiency of each plate above the bottom has a considerably lower value than that of the bottom plate, for the bulk of the entrained mist passing through the first plate also passes the other plates in sequence. Steam rate from 500 to 2500Kg/m
2 hr, plate spacing from 10 to 30cm and entrainment rate per unit steam rate from 10
-4 to 10
-2 were adopted as variable ranges.

There are only a few experimental works on the separation mechanism of a round nozzle impactor, though it is very important to study separation mechanism for particle target efficiency of an impactor.
Theoretical target efficiency is herein calculated by use of Strand's velocity potential taking clearance ratio into consideration, and is in fairly good agreement with experimental results. Consequently, the mathematical model seems to represent the separation mechanism of a round nozzle impactor under usual operation conditions. And the smaller the clearance ratio, the larger the slope of partial separation efficiency curve; that is, sharp particle classification can be achieved in small clearance ratio.

The capacity of a suspended solids contact sedimentation tank is studied from sedimentation phenomena and flow characteristics of flocculated suspensions.
Based on these general considerations, we have developed a high efficiency solid contact sedimentation tank with the settling tube and rising tube which connect the sludge blanket and the clarification zone in the concentrator separated from sedimentation compartment for the use of the phenomena of density current.

Based on the investigation of the mixing process of viscous liquid in a stirred vessel, “mixing time index” and “mixing time constant” are defined for indicating the res-ponse to a concentration pulse in the vessel.
According to the calculation of the response with the circulation time distribution curve, it is shown from “mixing time index” and “mixing time constant” that the mixing of the liquid is favorable when the distribution curve is broad.
In the range of low Reynolds number, the mixing is achieved by two kinds of mechanisms, i.e. those due to convective flow and diffusive flow. The contribution of both mechanisms can be estimated with the use of “mixing time constant”.
