Xanthomonas campestris pv.
oryzae is known to lose its aggressiveness gradually through successive transfers on artificial media. The present experiments were made to recover the aggressiveness from such weakened isolates. Many single colony subcultures obtained from the weakened isolates were tested for their aggressiveness on rice seedlings of variety Kinmaze. Results revealed that the aggressiveness of different single colony subcultures varied significantly from one to the other. Differences in the aggressiveness of those subcultures were maintained after repeated transfers, indicating that they were not due to experimental or temporal fluctuation. The original culture showed an intermediate level of aggressiveness among various single colony subcultures. Mix-inoculation with two differently aggressive subcultures resulted in various intermediate values of aggressiveness depending on the ratio of the mixed inocula. These data suggest that the old weakened isolates are the mixture of cells with different level of aggressiveness, so that we can select more aggressive isolates than the original ones by single colony subculture. A uniformly high level of aggressiveness was observed among the single colony subcultures from the isolates preserved by lyophilization.

The following results were obtained from the studies on the control of rhizome rot of ginger cultivated successively and protectively for immature rhizome production in plastic house.
1) The causal fungal pathogen was not consistently isolated from the rotten parts of ginger for seeding or injuries caused by soil animal feedings and harvest.
2) The disease did not develop when the seeds from rhizome rot-free areas were sown in the soils disinfected by methylbromide.
3) The incidence of the disease was reduced by pre-treating seeds and soils with echlomezol (5-ethoxy-3-trichloromethyl-1,2,4-thiadiazole) and methyl bromide respectively.
4) Further spread of the disease was prevented by applying echlomezol as a drench around sources of primary infection.

Damping-off disease of Mitsuba (
Cryptotaenia japonica HASSK.) caused by
Pythium sp. in hydroponic culture was reduced by using of high concentrations of hydroponic culture medium. Concentration higher than 2.0 unit (2.0 fold of the concentration of the standard hydroponic culture solution) was effective in inhibiting disease incidence. At this concentration, zoospore formation of
Pythium was reduced, and at 2.5 unit of hydroponic culture solution no zoospore formation was observed.
High concentrations of hydroponic culture solution inhibited the differentiation of vesicle contents into zoospores, and the release of zoospores from vesicle resulting in germination of cysted zoospores inside vesicles.
The inhibition of zoospore formation was likely to be caused by calcium ion present in the hydroponic culture solution, since the ion at concentrations higher than 0.25% could inhibited by the formation.

The present experiments were made to clarify the parasitism of a powdery mildew fungus,
Erysiphe heraclei parasitic on carrot. The fungus parasitized only on carrot, but did not parasitize other 23 plant species tested. In contrast, carrot was not parasitized by isolates of
E. heraclei parasitic on
Chenopodium ambrosioides L. or
Torilis japonica (HouTT.) DC. No morphological differences were observed among these isolates in their conidial stage.

The homogenates prepared from 19 species of seeds were tested for their activity in inhibiting infection of tobacco mosaic virus, ordinary strain, (TMV-OM). Seeds were homogenized in neutral phosphate buffer (20 ml/g seeds) and centrifuged at 10,000×g for 20 minutes. The resultant supernatants (designated as sap) were used for all the experiments.
Highly potent activity of virus infection was observed in the sap from
Dianthus chinensis L.,
D. Caryophyllus L.,
D. barbatus L.,
Callistephus chinensis NEES.,
Chenopodium amaranticolor L.,
Datura stramonium L.,
Cucumis sativus L.,
C. Melo L.,
Melitotus indica ALL.,
Brassica Rapa L.,
Lactuca sativa L. Rather weak activity was observed in the sap from
Lochnera rosea REICHB.,
Impatiens Balsamina L.,
Physalis Alkekengi L.,
Capsicaum annum L.,
Chrysanthemum coronarium L.,
Trifolium repens L.
No activity was found in the saps from
Autirrhiuum majus L.,
Tagetes Patula L. When the sap was diluted to 10
-1, 10
-2, 10
-3, and 10
-4 with neutral phosphate buffer, the sap from
D. barbatus showed about 90% inhibition even at 10
-3 dilution but the activity of the sap from
C. sativus diminished at 10
-1.
The greater part of the inhibitory activity of the sap from
D. barbatus was destroyed by heating at 100°C for 10 minutes and by phenol treatment for 10 minutes. But chloroform treatment for 10 minutes showed no significant change in the activity.
