Tomato Fusarium wilt caused by
Fusarium oxysporum f. sp.
lycopersici race J3 (Yamamoto et al, 1974), proved to be similar to crown and root rot of tomatoes in U. S. A. (Rowe, 1980), has become a major disease in the production of green house tomatoes in winter. Contrary to Fusarium wilt caused by other races such as race 1 or 2, browning of vascular bundles in the stem affected by race J3 rarely develops more than 10cm above the soil level. However, a Japanese variety with high quality“First”was very susceptible to the disease and discoloration of vascular bundles in the stem developed higher than base of the first cluster. The pathogenic fungus was isolated consistently from the discolored xylem tissues of the peduncle in the first cluster. It was also isolated from tissue sections obtained from the mesocarp including finer vascular bundles as well as from the seeds. Percentage of Fusarium contaminated seeds was varied in seed samples extracted from different fruit each other and it showed from 0.8 to 2.5%. With advance of maturity of diseased fruits, kept in a room for about one month after harvesting, the fungus latent in the tissues of the fruit multiplied saprophytically within the decaying mesocarp resulting in densely infected seeds showing almost 100% of seed infection. The fusaria in the seeds were killed almost completely by dry-heating the seeds at 75 C for 7 days. Pre-drying of the seeds at 40 C for 24 hours was recommended in order to prevent the loss of seed viability by reducing moisture content of seeds.

Effect of 6 different types of nitrogen source (ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, urea, nitrogen lime, CDU and IB) on
Fusarium wilt of cucumber and the causal fungus,
Fusarium oxysporum f.
cucumerinum was examined in this paper.
1) Types of nitrogen source showed different effects on fungal growth and pathogenicity. Fungal growth and pathogenicity were not positively correlated.
2) Types of nitrogen source were associated with pH of soil. However, the correlation between soil pH and occurrence of the disease was not observed.
3) Types of nitrogen source which increased soil electron conductivity tended to accelerate occurrence of the disease.
4) Ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate had an effect to maintain fungal population for a long period and in addition accelerated occurrence of the disease, while urea, nitrogen lime, CDU and IB did not have such effects.
5) Occurrence of the disease was positively correlated with population density of the fungus in soil.
6) Types of nitrogen source which had an effect to maintain the fungal population for a long period suppressed population density of bacteria in soil.
