We studied efficacy of hot water treatment and bactericide treatments of watermelon seeds infested by Acidovorax avenae subsp. citrulli in order to control bacterial watermelon fruit blotch that was a seed-borne disease. We conducted hot water and bactericide treatments of infected seeds that were obtained from fruit inoculated with A. avenae subsp. citrulli, and then evaluated disease occurrence of watermelon seedlings that grew under high temperature and high humidity conditions. As a result, hot water treatment of infested seeds with 54-56°C for 10-30min reduced disease incidence but did not eradicate the pathogen. Among bactericide treatments, antibiotic preparations were more effective than copper compounds and other pesticides. Moreover, low concentration and long time soaking treatments were much superior to high concentration and short time treatments. Bactericide treatment under vacuum was not so good as normal treatment. Although bactericide treatment also reduced disease incidence, it did not eradicate the pathogen.

In August 1999, we found a disease of cabbage plug seedling in Mie, Japan. The hypocotyl got wilted and narrow with straight hyphae on the surface. At the top of the hyphae, there was a black dot. A fungus grew from the hyphae and moved onto medium. When the mycelia on medium were contacted to hypocotyl of cabbage plug seedlings, they were affected with damping-off in hot and humid condition. On the diseased plant, conidiophores were produced as like as the first-founded symptom. Sporangiophores were also produced on the diseased seedlings. Based on morphology of conidiophore, sporangiophore, conidium and sporangiospore, the isolated fungus was identified as Choanephora cucurbitarum (Berk. et Ray.) Thaxter. This is the first report of disease of cabbage caused by the fungus in Japan.

Onion thrips, Thrips tabaci (Lindeman) have caused a serious damage to fruit of Japanese persimmon, Diospyros kaki Thunb., (especially variety 'Tonewase') in August-September since 1999 in Wakayama Prefecture. Some organophosphates, acetamiprid, chlorphenapir and cartap were effective to T. tabaci, whereas some pyrethroids were less effective.

Paracercopis assimilis (Uhler) is one of the pests causing a damage to fruit in Japanese persimmon. A negative relationship was found between the peak dispersal time of P. assimilis and mean temperature in April and in May. Y=-0.4426X
4+10.56 (r=-0.5141, P<0.05) Y=-0.4838X
5+13.32(r=-0.4650, P<0.05) where: Y is the time index starting from June; X
4 and X
5 are the mean temperature in April and May, respectively.
